  3. Utility vehicles accounted for a record 55.3 percent of total sales

Maruti Suzuki continued its dominance of the top 10 bestsellers list with six cars, while Tata fielded two, and Mahindra and Hyundai had one each. That Indians have a tendency towards the SUV body type is obvious when one sees six of them in this list – the Creta, Nexon, Fronx (1.8 lakh units), the Scorpio twins (1.77 lakh units), Brezza (1.75 lakh units) and Punch (1.73 lakh units). In fact, SUVs accounted for a record 55.3 percent of total passenger vehicle sales in 2025. The list shows the dwindling number of hatchbacks – just the Wagon R (1.94 lakh units) and Swift (1.89 lakh units). It also shows the resilience of the Maruti Ertiga, which is the only MPV here, with 1.92 lakh units sold.

The wholesales data for 2025 underscores a key shift in India’s car market. While SUVs now account for over half of total industry volumes, the top-selling model remains a compact sedan, reinforcing the continued importance of value, efficiency and total cost of ownership in buying decisions.

In 2024, the Tata Punch broke Maruti Suzuki’s 40-year streak at the top of the bestsellers list, with wholesales of about 2.02 lakh units. With the Dzire, Maruti is now back at the summit. In years past, it was usually Maruti’s Wagon R or Swift hatchbacks that outsold other models in India.
