We’ve already reported on JSW Motors’s plans to enter the Indian automotive market as a standalone brand with rebadged Chinese vehicles, more specifically a Jetour T2-based plug-in hybrid SUV and a Chery iCar V23-based electric SUV. Now, we have learnt there’s a third product in the pipeline, based on Chery’s Jaecoo J5. Incidentally, a prototype of the Jaecoo J5 was recently spotted testing in India, further underscoring the company’s intent.
- Jaecoo J5 will be a midsize SUV positioned against the likes of Creta Electric
- Gets a 60.9kWh battery pack with an NEDC claimed range of 461km
- Will likely be assembled in India at the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar plant
Jaecoo J5-based EV: What do the spy shots reveal?
The prototype spotted near Pune was heavily camouflaged, but the SUV’s overall profile and the detailing on the tail-lights suggest that this is Chery’s Jaecoo J5. Like Jetour and iCar, Jaecoo is yet another sub-brand under China’s Chery Automobile.

The Jaecoo J5-based SUV is expected to sport a clean and minimalistic design with typical SUV design traits. Abroad, the J5 gets slim LED headlamps and tail-lamps, both connected by a contrasting trim at the front and rear, and 19-inch aero-optimised wheels. The minimalist theme continues inside with a large 14.8-inch vertically oriented touchscreen dominating the dashboard. Higher-spec variants also come equipped with a panoramic sunroof, powered and ventilated front seats, a 540‑degree camera system, 6 airbags and Level 2 ADAS. However, all Jaecoo branding on the J5 is expected to be swapped out for JSW Motors’s own.

Jaecoo J5 EV technical details
The international‑spec Jaecoo J5 is just under 4.4 metres long, is a strict five‑seater and is marginally larger overall than the Hyundai Creta. It gets both hybrid and full-electric powertrains abroad, but for India, JSW Motors is understood to be considering only the all-electric version.
The all-electric J5 is powered by a 60.9kWh battery pack feeding a 210hp, 288Nm front‑axle motor, and its claimed NEDC range is 461km. Fast‑charging capability of up to around 130kW is quoted overseas, along with a 0‑100kph time of 7.3 seconds.

Initially, the model is expected to be assembled from CKD kits at JSW Motors’s Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (formerly Aurangabad) plant, with deep localisation possibly following at a later stage. However, a launch timeline is currently unclear, and it is expected to arrive only after the Jetour-based offering sometime in 2027. It will be positioned as a rival to the likes of the Hyundai Creta Electric, Mahindra BE 6 and Vinfast VF 6 in the Indian market.
