Thirty-one years and nine months after it was launched in Japan, the practical, spacious and venerable Wagon R has crossed a global sales milestone of a whopping 1 crore units. The Wagon R has been sold in over 75 countries, but India is its biggest market, with estimated sales of over 34 lakh units till June 2025, including 11.9 lakh units coming from just the third-generation model introduced in January 2019.

Suzuki Wagon R has sold in over 75 countries
The Wagon R has been on sale in countries across Europe, Japan, India and many more Asian countries. In addition to models exported from Japan, the Wagon R series has been produced in India, Hungary, and Indonesia, among other regions. In fact, it was even adapted to meet local needs, such as the Wagon R CNG in India and the Wagon R Smile, which features sliding doors, in Japan. The Wagon R has been instrumental in Maruti Suzuki being the longstanding passenger vehicle market leader in India.

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R sales in India
Launched in India in December 1999, the Maruti Wagon R is close to completing 26 years in the domestic market and is one of the longest surviving models which includes the Honda City and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class.
Of the 1 crore Wagon Rs sold worldwide since 1993, India accounts for an estimated 34,14,176 units in the domestic market. A good number of made-in-India Wagon Rs have also been exported. The third and current generation of the Wagon R alone makes up a nearly 12 percent share of the Wagon R’s 10 million global sales.

In FY2025, Maruti Suzuki sold 1,98,451 Wagon Rs, down 1 percent from FY2024 (2,00,177 units). The Wagon R was also India’s bestselling passenger vehicle in FY2023 (2,12,340 units) and FY2022 (1,88,837 units).
Sales of the Maruti Wagon R have particularly accelerated after the launch of the third-generation model in January 2019. The Wagon R was also one of the first Maruti Suzuki cars to get a CNG powertrain and remains one of the bestselling products in the company’s extensive CNG portfolio.

Apart from being a great VFM private vehicle, fleet sales have really helped maintain the sales momentum of the WagonR.
