Design and Quality

9.0

The Super Meteor 650 follows a traditional cruiser design with a round headlight, swept-back handlebars and a teardrop-shaped fuel tank flowing into a scooped-out seat. The exhaust pipes are neatly tucked in and exit straight, while body panels fit together with tight gaps. The paint finish and aluminium switch cubes look and feel special, thanks to the materials and finishing.

Position and Comfort

7.0

The riding position is relaxed, with feet stretched out in front and a slight reach to the handlebars. Despite the cruiser layout, there is no excessive pressure on the tailbone, and the overall posture feels unstrained. The touring seat is noticeably more comfortable than the standard unit and remains supportive over long hours.

Performance and Fuel Economy / Range

8.0

The 648cc parallel-twin delivers strong bottom-end performance, followed by a healthy mid-range surge and continued drive towards the top end. Fuelling is smooth and precise, and the engine remains refined through most riding conditions. A slight buzz can be felt through the handlebars beyond 110kph, but the motor otherwise complements the motorcycle’s relaxed cruising nature well.

Ride and Handling

6.0

At 241kg, the weight is noticeable during low-speed manoeuvres, but it becomes far less apparent once the motorcycle is moving. The long wheelbase and relaxed geometry help it feel planted and stable at highway speeds. Suspension travel is limited by cruiser standards, so there is a firm edge to the ride, although the shocks do a decent job of reducing the impact of road imperfections.

Features and Safety

Price and Verdict (Overall Rating)

7.0

The Super Meteor 650 delivers the relaxed cruising experience it sets out to offer. Strong build quality, a capable engine and stable highway manners work in its favour, while the standard seat and windscreen could be better. It is the most expensive Royal Enfield on sale, but the hardware, finish and overall experience justify the price.

Hi, I am confused between the Triumph Scrambler 400X, Harley-Davidson X440, Royal Enfield Himalayan, and Royal Enfield Meteor 650. I previously owned a Royal Enfield Thunderbird 350 and am now looking to upgrade. My usage will mostly involve daily commuting in Pune traffic, with a 10 km highway stretch included in my 24 km one-way ride. I want a comfortable bike that can be ridden daily with a pillion and should also be comfortable enough for my wife to ride along with our 2-year-old child.

In terms of familiarity, the Harley Davidson X440 will be the logical next step up for you from your Thunderbird 350. With its neutral ergonomics, plush suspension and torquey air/oil-cooled engine, the X440 T will serve your use case well. If you want something with a bit more performance and more commanding ergonomics, then the Triumph Scrambler 400 XC is what you should consider. The Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 will easily be the most comfortable for two-up riding of the bikes you've shortlisted, but its heavy kerb weight could be hard to manage, especially with a pillion onboard in stacatto big-city traffic. We'd recommend you steer clear of the Super Meteor 650 because its laidback riding position and stiff rear shocks will cause you discomfort over bad roads. Take a test ride of the other three with your pillion to see which one you find comfortable before you make your purchase.

I am 39 years old and 160 cm (5′5″) tall. I have been happily riding a Honda (or Bajaj) Avenger 220 for the last 12 years, and I want to upgrade. Although I really want a Super Meteor 650, it’s too heavy and would be difficult for me to maneuver, so it’s not a practical choice. I prefer cruiser-style bikes and have been exploring the Keeway V302. Please suggest a good bike with at least 350 cc.

The Keeway V302C is a unique offering with its V-twin engine and mean, bobber looks, and it is also a rare sight on our roads, which might persuade you to get one. However, in our experience, there are a lot of areas where this bike needs work. Its rear suspension has very little travel, leading to a jarring ride over less-than-perfect roads. Its fit and finish, as well as overall build quality, cannot justify its Rs 4.15 lakh (ex-showroom) price tag, and Keeway has a minuscule dealer network across India. Also, the V302C isn't a machine that has cemented its reputation for reliability like other, more mainstream rivals. All this being said, we recommend you steer clear of the Keeway V302C and, for that matter, other Chinese-origin bikes on sale in India. Sadly, the cruiser space in the middleweight displacement segment has seen very few entrants and aside from the Super Meteor, you are limited to the Kawasaki Eliminator 500 (Rs 6.16 lakh) and Vulcan S (Rs 8.13 lakh), the only two offerings from a reputed make under the Rs 10 lakh mark. Other options will require you to significantly increase your budget.
