2025 will go down as a landmark year for scooters in India. Annual scooter sales surged to a record 75.2 lakh units, up 13 percent year-on-year, crossing the 70 lakh milestone for the first time. This strong performance played a crucial role in pushing overall two-wheeler sales past 2.05 crore units, a level the industry had not reached in the last seven years.
1. Honda sold 28.8 lakh scooters in 2025, up 1 percent YoY
2. Sales gap between Honda and TVS narrowed significantly
3. Access remained the bestselling model for Suzuki
Honda, TVS and Suzuki dominate scooter sales
TVS emerged as one of the biggest beneficiaries of the scooter boom
Scooters also strengthened their position within the broader two-wheeler market comprising motorcycles, scooters and mopeds. In 2025, scooters accounted for 37 percent of two-wheeler sales, up from 34 percent in the previous year. Motorcycles, on the other hand, grew by just 1.1 percent YoY and their share in two-wheeler sales slipped to 61 percent from 63 percent.
It’s sufficient to say that if not for the robust scooter sales, overall two-wheeler sales would not have crossed 2 crore in 2025 after seven years.
Three manufacturers – Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India, TVS Motor Company and Suzuki Motorcycle India – together sold 61.5 lakh scooters, accounting for 82 percent of overall scooter sales in 2025.
Electric scooters continued their steady rise, with sales touching just under 9,69,500 units, comprising 13 percent of overall scooter sales, up from 10 percent in 2024.
Honda leads, but growth slows
Honda, the country’s long-standing scooter market leader, sold 28.8 lakh scooters in 2025, a modest increase of 1 percent or over 20,000 units compared to the previous year.
October 2025 was Honda’s strongest month, with sales figures being just under 3.63 lakh units, up 21 percent YoY, helped by GST 2.0-led price cuts. Despite remaining firmly in the lead, Honda’s slower growth meant its scooter market share fell sharply to 38 percent, down from 43 percent in 2024.
TVS records strongest growth among major players
TVS emerged as one of the biggest beneficiaries of the scooter boom. Its scooter sales (ICE-powered and electric) crossed 20 lakh for the first time, soaring 27 percent YoY to a record 21.8 lakh units. That’s over 4.61 lakh more scooters compared to 2024, which helped TVS increase its market share to 29 percent from 25 percent.
Importantly, the sales gap between Honda and TVS narrowed significantly to just over 7.21 lakh units, down from more than 11.6 lakh units the previous year. E-scooters played a key role, with TVS selling an estimated over 3.28 lakh units, up 35 percent YoY, comprising 15 percent of the brand’s scooter sales. TVS was the No. 1 electric two-wheeler manufacturer in India in retail sales last year.
Suzuki sold 11.7 lakh scooters
Suzuki Motorcycle India sold 11.7 lakh scooters in 2025, up 11 percent YoY, allowing it to retain a 15 percent market share. The Access 125 remained its bestseller, while the Avenis and Burgman Street benefited from customers upgrading to 125cc scooters. Suzuki has since entered the e-scooter space with the premium e-Access, launched in January 2026.
Hero sees strong growth too, supported by Vida
Hero MotoCorp ranked fourth in scooters, selling just over 5,18,000 units, up 40 percent YoY. Its market share rose to 7 percent, supported by rapidly growing Vida e-scooter sales of just under 1.24 lakh units, up 184 percent.
2025 a mixed bag for Yamaha and Bajaj
Yamaha reported flat scooter sales of just under 3.03 lakh units, resulting in a marginal market share drop to 4.02 percent.
Bajaj Auto, present only in electric scooters through the Chetak and Yulu, sold over 2.86 lakh units, up 14 percent YoY. Supply constraints mid-year limited higher volumes, though its market share edged up to 3.8 percent.
Ather shines in the EV space
Ather Energy had a standout year, selling just under 2.25 lakh electric scooters, up 58 percent from 2024. Driven largely by the Rizta family scooter, Ather’s market share rose to 3 percent.
EV growth continues; GST 2.0 lifts demand for ICE scooters
Sales of electric scooters surged 41 percent YoY in 2025, aided by a wider model range and improving acceptance. TVS, Bajaj Auto, Ather Energy and Hero MotoCorp sold over 9.63 lakh e-scooters combined in 2025.
However, the biggest short-term catalyst for overall scooter demand was GST 2.0, which lowered the tax rate on ICE-powered scooters, leading to price reductions and improved affordability. Scooter dispatches peaked in October 2025 at 8.24 lakh units, with strong momentum continuing through November and December. The fourth quarter of 2025 accounted for nearly 29 percent of annual scooter sales.
