BMW Motorrad has unveiled the R 1300 R Superhooligan at the 84th Daytona 200 weekend, marking 50 years since Steve McLaughlin's victory in the first AMA Superbike race at Daytona on March 6, 1976. The custom build from BMW Motorrad's Custom Speed Shop honours both McLaughlin's Daytona win and Reg Pridmore's inaugural AMA Superbike Championship title, both achieved on BMW R 90 S bikes for the Butler & Smith team.

  1. Features McLaughlin's ‘83’ number and 1976 R 90 S livery
  2. Will be raced by Nate Kern in Mission Foods Super Hooligan series

BMW R 1300 R Superhooligan details

The bike has been created by the BMW Motorrad Custom Speed Shop

The R 1300 R Superhooligan was created by a small team at BMW Motorrad's Custom Speed Shop. The bike is based on the standard R 1300 R that’s powered by a 1,300cc boxer-twin that produces 145hp and 149Nm. BMW also mentions that the Superhooligan is capable of reaching speeds up to 275kph.

The Superhooligan pays tribute to McLaughlin's 1976 machine with the ‘83’ race number and features front fender and tank side panels finished in the classic BMW R 90 S colour scheme from that era. The bike also gets blue accents on the aluminium rear frame and fork tubes that match the brake calipers borrowed from the BMW M 1000 RR. Other notable features include a carbon front wheel from the M 1000 RR, along with other carbon fiber bits for the bodywork.

Suspension componentry includes a fully adjustable Wilbers USD fork that BMW says has been extended by 30mm for increased lean angle clearance, and a Wilbers rear shock. The package is completed with fully adjustable Advik hand levers, an Akrapovič titanium exhaust system with a carbon end can, and milled BMW Motorrad footrests.

BMW Motorrad brand ambassador Nate Kern will race the R 1300 R Superhooligan in the Mission Foods Super Hooligan series during the MotoAmerica Daytona 200 weekend from March 5 to 7, 2026. The bike  will be displayed in the paddock alongside the original Butler & Smith BMW R 90 S race machines from 1976, which have been specially prepared by BMW Group Classic from the BMW Museum's in-house racing workshop.
