The recently launched Mahindra XUV 3XO EV is currently the Indian carmaker’s most affordable electric offering. Compared to its ICE-powered counterparts, the XUV 3XO EV isn’t all that different, but how does it hold up against its predecessor, the XUV400? We put both under the microscope to find out.

Mahindra XUV 3XO EV vs XUV400 exterior design

The XUV400 was an all-electric derivative of the XUV300, and since the XUV 3XO is the latter's facelift, the XUV 3XO EV is essentially a facelifted version of the XUV400. It’s worth noting, though, that the XUV400 is 300mm longer and 17mm taller than the XUV 3XO EV.

Styling-wise, both SUVs are poles apart, at least up front. The XUV400 has a more upright fascia, with sharp, rectangular headlights with a copper trim connecting it to the fog lamps. On the other hand, the XUV 3XO EV is edgier and more radical, with hexagonal headlights that extend into the bumper and integrate the fog lamps. There's also thicker cladding on the bumpers and sides.

Coming to the side profile, there’s not much to differentiate the two aside from the XUV 3XO EV’s curtailed bumper overhangs – both SUVs have the same 2,600mm wheelbase – and larger 17-inch alloys (AX7L variant only). At the back, though, the XUV 3XO EV does look more modern thanks to its LED light bar and chunkier bumper with copper accenting, while the XUV400 gets a conventional set of tail-lamps and a simpler design for the bumper.

Inside, you’d be hard-pressed to find many distinctions between the XUV 3XO EV and XUV400. Their dashboard layouts are largely identical – right down to the infotainment system UI – with only the steering wheels being slightly different. Boot space is an interesting area, though, because the XUV 3XO EV's 364-litre capacity is only 14 litres short of the XUV400's 378-litre boot, which is rather impressive since the latter SUV is a considerable bit longer.

Being a newer model, the XUV 3XO EV does offer more creature comforts than the XUV400, such as a panoramic sunroof, a 7-speaker Harman Kardon sound system with Dolby Atmos, a 360-degree camera, Level 2 ADAS, and more.

Under the skin, the XUV 3XO EV and XUV400 are nigh-on identical. Both come equipped with a 39.4kWh battery pack wired up to a sole front-mounted motor, which outputs 150hp and 310Nm. Interestingly, despite the XUV400 being longer than the XUV 3XO EV, Mahindra claims the same 8.3sec 0-100kph time and 351km range (ARAI-tested) for both SUVs. Charging times are exactly the same too, with the 39.4kWh battery taking 6.5 hours to go from 0-100 percent using a 7.2kW AC charger, while a 50kW DC fast charger can juice the pack from 0-80 percent in 50 minutes.

The XUV 3XO EV is much easier on the pocket than the XUV400, which is currently available in its top-spec variant only. Compared to the range-topping XUV 3XO EV AX7L variant, the XUV400 is more expensive by Rs 2.53 lakh. Considering the XUV 3XO EV's bolstered features set and identical powertrain, it makes for exceptionally good value compared to the XUV400.
