BMW X1

Quick review

26 Jun '23

BMW’s baby SUV has grown up

It looks like the X3 in profile
Almost the same size as the first-gen X5
Measures 4.5m in length, and 1.6m in height

26 Jun '23

Design is clearly a BMW

Big kidney grille dominates nose
Gets segment-first adaptive LED lights
Drag coefficient of 0.26
Has a hint of Hofmeister kink after the C-pillar

26 Jun '23

Uses a wider platform

X1 uses BMW's latest FWD FAAR architecture
Platform is more space efficient
Can also fit a full-sized EV battery

26 Jun '23

X1 aces it on the inside

Interiors feel from a segment above
Unconventional dash is a welcome change
Vertically mounted wireless charger is unique

Display looks great

Driver-centric infotainment not as large as other BMWs
Quality of screen is good, slick to use
Reversing Assistant works well

26 Jun '23

Interior bits that can improve

Regular functions require diving into the menu
Drive modes, aircon and blower controls in touchscreen
No cooled seats and heads-up display

26 Jun '23

Rear seat comfort

Plenty of legroom
Good thigh and back support
Rear seats recline, legroom can be extended by 130mm

26 Jun '23

Silent and smooth

Ride quality isn’t soft on 18-inch wheels
Stiff suspension improves as you go faster
Engine is near silent at low revs; gravelly at higher revs

26 Jun '23

Power delivery isn’t spiky

Power doesn’t come in a rush
Has a nice, long linear pull
At higher revs, it feels like it needs more grunt
Boost mode is more for convenience than power

26 Jun '23

Driving manners are first-rate

Despite FWD and high centre of mass, driving
pleasure is good
Nice ride and handling balance; feels connected
to the road
Steering lacks feel but is direct
