The Formula Bharat student competition will return to the Kari Motor Speedway for its 2023 edition, which will be held from January 19 to 24. Over 53 student engineering teams from across India will be participating in the seventh edition of the event.

  • Kari Motor Speedway to host Formula Bharat 2023
  • Student teams to build prototypes from scratch
  • Will be judged on engineering design, dynamic performance

What is Formula Bharat?

Formula Bharat can be thought of as a training ground for a future in the automotive industry. Teams have to design and fabricate a prototype formula-style vehicle that meets the Formula Bharat rules. All participating teams have to build their vehicles from scratch and seek sponsorship and donations to fund the project. Competition is divided into two categories – combustion and electric.

A jury of experts – hailing from motorsport, automotive and supplier industries – will then judge the teams and vehicles in the areas of engineering design, overall cost, marketability and dynamic performance. The 2022 edition was held as a hybrid event due to COVID-19 restrictions. However, with restrictions now lifted, the competition returns to its on-track format at the Kari Motor Speedway for 2023. The site will also be open to visitors; you can head here for more information about visitor passes.

Two classes for Formula Bharat

For the seventh edition, two classes have been introduced. Class I gives aspiring student teams the chance to have their conceptual designs judged by industry experts, without having to build a physical prototype. The winners of this class were already announced in November 2022, with Hermes Racing (Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology) winning in the combustion category and IITK Motorsports (Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur) winning in the electric category.

Class II of the competition will be held from January 19-24. Here, the teams will have to present their prototypes on site. A number of on-track events will also be held for the teams to demonstrate how well their vehicles hold up in real-world conditions.
