I went to book a Hyundai Creta but seeing the stylish Verna next to Creta, took its test drive. The seat and ambience seem way better than any car and have almost decided to go with Verna but I have one doubt about its ground clearance. Since I will be driving the car in Chennai city and on highways with occasional patchy roads, even if scrapping occurs rarely, will it be a costly affair to repair?

Go for the Hyundai Verna. Your usage in the city and highways with only occasional patchy roads is exactly the kind of scenario where the Verna works well. It offers a more premium cabin, a lower seating position and a more engaging driving experience than the Creta, which is why it felt so good on the test drive. The ground clearance is lower than the Creta, but it is not a deal-breaker. On rare occasions, you may scrape the underbody on a badly designed speed breaker or a deep pothole, but this is usually limited to minor scrapes on the underbody cladding or the exhaust heat shield. These are not expensive to repair and do not affect the car's reliability or safety. The Verna is a well-engineered sedan and can handle occasional rough patches without issue. If you are still concerned, you can take speed breakers at an angle and slow down on bad patches, which will minimise the chances of scraping. Overall, the Verna will give you a enjoyable ownership experience, and the ground clearance is not a reason to avoid it.

Since you already own a sedan, you could consider replacing it with the updated Skoda Slavia. It gets a 1-litre turbo-petrol engine and now comes with an 8-speed automatic gearbox. It is very good to drive, feels solidly built, and with ample ground clearance, you don't need to worry about unusually tall speedbreakers either. The 2026 version also comes with an updated air-con unit for better cabin cooling.Alternatively, you could look at the Hyundai Verna 1.5 Petrol IVT. It is a smooth, feature-rich sedan, and is backed by Hyundai's widespread support network.Since there are no EV sedans in the market, you will have to opt for a crossover like the Tata Nexon EV, MG Windsor or Kia Syros in that price point. Out of these, the Syros feels the most comfortable and user-friendly, and if you don't mind the way it looks, it is worth a serious consideration. But opt for an EV only if you can arrange for home charging, as relying on public charging can be a bit tricky.

What is the best hatchback or small sedan for a senior citizen? My running is less than 1,500km per year. I currently have a Ford Figo Aspire Titanium, which is well built but not nimble enough for city driving and has a ridiculous turning radius.

The AMT isn't as slick as a torque converter automatic or CVT, but it does make city driving easy nevertheless.If you prefer a small sedan, the Honda Amaze CVT is a solid choice. The CVT is totally seamless, and its engine is very refined. Being a Honda car, it is reliable and well-made, and offers a comfortable cabin. If the CVT variants of the Amaze exceed your budget, then the Maruti Suzuki Dzire AMT is also an excellent choice. You will notice a small pause between shifts from its AMT, but it is still easy to drive and very fuel efficient.At 1,500km a year, petrol is the only sensible fuel choice. The focus should be on a car that makes every short trip effortless, so drive all of these and see which works best for you.

Hi, we have shortlisted two cars but are unable to decide which one to finalise: the Honda Amaze CVT ZX and Hyundai i20 IVT Asta (O). Both my wife and I will drive the car, so we want good rear-seat comfort and space. Our daily usage is around 50km. Of the 365 days in a year, around 65 days will involve highway driving, while the remaining 300 days will be city driving, usually in traffic in Chennai. We are a family of five, with four adults and one eight-year-old child. We have previously owned a Ford Fiesta and Santro Xing, so we are comfortable with both sedans and hatchbacks. Which one would you recommend?

Plus, it is starting to feel dated now and is not as well-equipped as the Honda car mentioned above, which was just launched last year. Since you are already comfortable with both sedans and hatchbacks, the Amaze is the more sensible long-term choice for your usage pattern.

Hi, I own a Kia Sonet, which I am extremely disappointed with. About 99% of my driving is in the city, and my budget for a new car is around Rs 15-16 lakh. My priorities are a sedan with a smooth and comfortable ride, particularly over city speed breakers and potholes, along with good mileage, relatively low and hassle-free maintenance, reasonable running costs, and good after-sales service. Unfortunately, I have found the Kia Sonet disappointing in all these areas. I am therefore looking for a decent sedan that better suits my requirements. I also believe sedans generally offer a smoother and more comfortable ride than many of the newer compact SUVs. Please correct me if I am wrong and suggest some suitable options within my budget.
