Volvo has announced that all of its cars launched from 2019 will get an electric motor. The array of electric-powered cars will include all-electric, plug-in hybrid and mild hybrid models. The carmaker also stated that internal combustion engines will be gradually phased out and replaced with electrified options, but gave no time frame for this transition.

It will launch five fully electric models between 2019 and 2021, three of which will be Volvo models and two of which will be high-performance electrified cars from Polestar, Volvo Cars’ performance brand. These five cars will be supplemented by a range of petrol and diesel plug-in hybrid and mild hybrid 48V options on all models.

The company had stated that it plans to sell a total of 1 million electrified cars by 2025. Volvo boss Håkan Samuelsson has said, “People increasingly demand electrified cars and we want to respond to our customers’ current and future needs. You can now pick and choose whichever electrified Volvo you wish."

Last month, the carmaker had announced that it would make Polestar a separately branded company for electric high-performance cars.

The Swedish carmaker isn't the only one to adopt this strategy. Volkswagen, too, has declared its plan to introduce a range of all-electric cars alongside its non-electric models.
