Volvo has crowned its flagship S90 sedan and its estate sibling the V90 with new R-Design versions. The new trims are expected to join the S90 and V90’s line-up internationally sometime early next year.

As with other R-Design models, the S90 and V90 R-Design gets a more aggressive body kit with new bumpers, a bespoke grille and new design alloy wheels.

Inside, both cars get new trim options, sports seats and steering wheel, and new interior lighting.
Mechanically, Volvo says that it has tweaked the chassis to provide a more "energetic, road-hugging drive". The company though did not specify any further mechanical changes made to the model.

Volvo senior vice president (marketing and customer service), Björn Annwall said: "R-Design delivers an edge to our elegant estate and sedan models in our 90 Series, with a winning combination of a sportier, more responsive drive with clearly visible performance styling.”

Volvo will bring the S90 sedan to India sometime later this year as a replacement for the ageing S80 sedan. The large sedan is expected to initially be available with a diesel engine only, which will be the same 2.0-litre unit from the XC90. The motor is expected to be available in two states of tune – 190hp and a more potent 235hp.

The S90 headed to India could receive the R-Design trim in the near future, as Volvo had introduced the package on the S60 and XC60 in 2014, and is likely to offer it on the XC90 sometime this year.
