Tata to unveil new petrol engine on Jan 20.

We were the first to reveal that Tata Motors is working on a new 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol motor and now, the carmaker has confirmed that it will take the wraps off this new unit on January 20, ahead of the Delhi Auto Expo 2014. This will be the carmaker's first all-new petrol engine since the Nano's 624cc two-cylinder motor back in 2009.

The new Tata 1.2-litre motor will produce around 80bhp and the carmaker has focused more on fuel efficiency and driveability rather than performance with this. Although the new motor has its roots in the cast-iron cylinder block of the 1.2 Xeta motor, the block has been redesigned for better stiffness and balance, weight has been significantly reduced and the cylinder head is all-new. Tata's TA65 gearbox, which has been significantly improved, will come mated to the engine.

This new 1.2-litre motor will debut in Tata's new hatchback codenamed the Tata Falcon which will be showcased at the Auto Expo 2014 and will also form the base for a new family of engines.
