Ford has launched the new Figo, and it replaces the older model in the exceptionally competitive hatchback segment in India. With the introduction of this new Figo, Ford looks to renew rivalry with the mighty popular Maruti Swift and the very capable Hyundai Grand i10. While the Swift is one the highest-selling cars in India, the Grand i10 too has made a name for itself as a good city runabout. Here's how the new Ford Figo compares against its direct rivals:

Heart of the matter

Starting with the petrol engines, all three cars use a 1.2-litre unit. While the power outputs are quite similar, the Figo makes slightly more power than the Swift, which makes a bit more than the Grand i10. All three cars generate max power around the 6,000rpm mark. Torque figures too paint a similar picture, but here the Figo has the lowest output; differences are minor nonetheless.

In terms of the oil burners, the Ford Figo has the biggest engine – a 1.5-litre motor; the Swift uses a 1.3-litre unit, and the Grand i10 has a 1.1-litre engine. While the Maruti and the Hyundai deliver similar amount of power, the Figo has a huge advantage here. It makes around 25bhp more than the Swift, which delivers a bit more power than the i10. Peak power from these diesel engines comes in around the 4,000rpm mark. The Hyundai engine makes the least torque too, the Swift betters that, while the Figo leads again.

It's only the Figo and the Grand i10 that have petrol automatic variants. But the automatic variant of the Figo comes with a different engine. It has a bigger 110.5bhp 1.5-litre petrol; that's considerably more power than the 82bhp Hyundai. The other big distinction is that the Figo gets a six-speed dual-clutch automatic as opposed to the Grand i10's four-speed torque converter.

Dimensions

Although the differences aren't significant, the Grand i10 has the most compact dimensions here. The Figo is the longest, followed closely by the Swift. It's a similar pattern in terms of height, wheelbase and ground clearance too. It's also interesting to note that the Figo and Swift share the same width. The numbers indicate a good amount of space in the Figo cabin.
