The all-new 2014 Mini hatchback has been unveiled at Mini's Cowley plant in Oxford, UK.

These pictures give our first official look at the Mark 3 hatchback.

The model has already been seen virtually undisguised in a series of spy shots, as both standard and hotter Cooper versions have been caught testing in Europe and North America.

A range of turbocharged direct-injection three and four-cylinder petrol engines will be offered at launch, including a 1.5-litre three-cylinder unit developing 134bhp. A 2.0-litre four-cylinder unit, meanwhile, develops 189bhp. Further variants are planned for release further down the line.

The only diesel engine confirmed so far is a 1.5-litre common-rail direct-injection unit with 114bhp. Efficiency is said to have been improved by as much as seven per cent over the older 1.6-litre unit it replaces.

Both petrol and diesel engine options are offered with new manual and automatic gearboxes, with stop/start functionality.

The all-new Mini is based on BMW's new front and all-wheel drive UKL1 platform. Although there's been a clear increase in size over the outgoing model, the company says overall weight has been reduced.

An array of new active safety technology will feature on the car, including a new active bonnet which will become a standard feature on the Mark 3 hatchback.
