AMG chief executive Tobias Moers has confirmed that the 555hp, 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine and updated exterior of the recently revealed GT C Roadster will be carried over to a future GT Coupe model. However, he did not confirm whether it would come as new model or be a facelifted version of the GT S.

Along with its more potent engine, which produces around 45hp more than that of the AMG GT S, the GT C Roadster receives altered gear ratios for its seven-speed Speedshift dual-clutch transaxles as well. The GT C Roadster also adopts the active air management system that made its debut on the hardcore GT R. It uses a series of vertical louvres within the grille, which automatically open and close depending on the temperature of the engine to either enhance cooling or smooth airflow.

No technical specifications have been revealed yet, but Moers’ announcement suggests the coupé will run with identical technical specifications to the roadster. It is likely be slightly faster due to a lighter kerb weight, and could take place of the GT S in Mercedes’ GT range.

Alternatively, it could arrive as a new model that ranks as a midway between the GT S and GT R. Comments from Moers could support the latter. “The AMG GT [success] shows we hit a nerve with the customers, hence why we are expanding the range,” he said.

The Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe is expected to launch internationally sometime in 2017.
