Mercedes-Benz India today introduced the locally built GLC SUV (both petrol and diesel versions) in an effort to enhance the car's appeal and reduce the waiting period.

With localisation, the SUV is now cheaper by Rs 4.20 lakh for the diesel variant and by Rs 4 lakh for the petrol, as against the imported or completely built-up (CBU) version that has been on sale in India since June this year. The locally assembled GLC is available in two trim levels – Style and Sport – with the petrol option only available on the top Sport trim. The diesel variant is available in both trim levels.

The GLC SUV is priced at Rs 47.90 lakh and Rs 51.50 lakh for the diesel 220d 4Matic Style and Sport variants respectively, while the 300 4Matic Sport petrol costs Rs 51.90 lakh (all prices, ex-showroom, Delhi).

Mercedes has in the past launched cars as CBUs, followed by models built in India, which are lower in price, but miss out on some equipment. In the case of the GLC too, the locally built models are lower in price and miss out on some equipment seen on the CBU models, which were dubbed ‘edition 1’.

The locally assembled GLC misses out on features like standard navigation system, electric tailgate, memory seats and three-zone climate control. The navigation system is now available as an option and the SUV now gets a dual-zone climate control system.

The reduction in prices is likely to boost demand for the GLC, ahead of the high sales expected during the festive season. Also, the lifting of the ban on sale of vehicles with diesel engines larger than 2,000cc is  expected further bolster sales of the SUV in key markets.

The GLC will be the ninth Mercedes model to be assembled at Chakan and will fill the gap between the GLA and the GLE. The German carmaker has maintained its focus on localisation and believes it is the key to success in the Indian luxury car business.

The carmaker’s portfolio of products built here already includes the CLA-, C-, E- and S-class sedans, the Maybach S 500 limousine and the GLA, GLE and GLS SUVs.
