Three months after it stopped production of the Tavera MUV for issues concerning the vehicle’s exhaust systems, GM India has resumed production of the vehicle.

It may be noted that the company had recalled 114, 000 Taveras for irregularities with the exhaust system and following a company-wide probe, asked several of its senior management to resign given their alleged role in the issue, as part of a company integrity policy.

The recall came following a surprise check by ARAI authorities which found that the BS III diesels that were rolling off the assembly lines were not meeting emissions norms.

The Tavera, which largely sells in its BS III avatar, sells about 1,200 units a month. Just over 8,000 units have been sold in this calendar year as against 13,000-odd units in the year-earlier period.

The taxi segment has seen new entrants in the form of the Ashok-Leyland Stile and last week, a first of its kind, a nine-seater Mahindra Xylo.
