These are the the newest set of leaked pics of the next-gen Toyota Fortuner. The current-generation Fortuner has been on sale in India from 2009 and this next-generation model will most likely debut here at the Auto Expo 2016.

As seen in the leaked images, the design language is now more in line with current-gen Toyota off-roaders sold internationally and the new Fortuner looks much sleeker. The overall profile still makes it look like a rugged SUV though. Unlike the earlier model though, the front styling of the next-gen Fortuner will not be based on the Hilux pickup truck (sold internationally).

Up front, the V-shaped twin-slat grille gets chrome surrounds on its borders and the Camry-like wraparound headlamps feature projector units. The front bumper comes with a broad chin that merges with the grille and at its corners sit vertical LED daytime-running lamps and round fog lamps. Moving on to the sides, the fenders are wide and the wheel arches are big enough to accommodate large, 12-spoke alloy wheels. The beltline is high and the windows are on the smaller side; a prominent kink on the glass-area just at the C-pillar gives it a unique look. The new Fortuner, like the current car, is expected to come with a floating D-pillar.

The first leaked interior picture of the upcoming Fortuner gives us a clear view of the new SUV’s dash and seating.  The dashboard gets a squarish design similar to the one seen in the current-generation Corolla Altis sold in India. It gets a mix of dark and light brown soft-touch material along with subtle usage of faux aluminum bits. The large infotainment screen sits at the centre and the controls for HVAC are placed below. The seven-seat cabin gets leather seats on higher trims and a new four spoke steering wheel with audio and Bluetooth controls.

Like the current version, the new Fortuner is also based on Toyota’s Innovative International Multi-purpose Vehicle (IMV) platform that also underpins the Hilux pick-up truck and the Innova. This means it will continue to be based on a ladder-frame chassis. Our sources tell us that the new Fortuner will have more interior room, especially in the third row.

The next-gen Fortuner and Innova will come with Toyota’s new GD series engines. The new GD series consists of two diesel engines – a 2.4-litre turbo-diesel, expected to replace the current 2.5-litre diesel unit, and a 2.8-litre that will replace the current 3.0-litre unit. The new 2.4-litre 2GD-FTV motor is rated at 148bhp and 40.78kgm of torque while the larger 2.8-litre 1GD-FTV is rated at 175bhp and 45.9kgm of torque.

The new Toyota Fortuner will compete with the likes of the new Ford Endeavour and the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport globally. We expect Toyota to bring the new Fortuner to Indian showrooms early next year.
