India Kawasaki Motors has just imported a Versys 650 from Thailand for the purpose of homologation.

The Versys 650 is a very different machine from the Ninja 650. It is a comfortable motorcycle, given its spacious-looking stepped saddle and raised handlebars that result in an upright seating position. The Versys 650 is similar looking to its elder sibling — the Versys 1000.

Kawasaki provides a high, height-adjustable windshield just like the one on the Versys 1000. A dual headlight unit makes its way here to aid night visibility. Reach-adjustable levers also make their way here.

The Kawasaki Versys 650 is powered by a 649cc, parallel-twin, four-stroke, liquid-cooled fuel-injected engine. The engine has a four valve per cylinder layout and uses a DOHC layout. It produces 68.1bhp of power at 8,500rpm and peak torque of 6.5kgm at 7,000rpm.

The Kawasaki Versys 650 has the advantage of USD front suspension and uses an off-set rear monoshock and alloy swingarm. Kawasaki does not provide off-road tyres on the bike and brands the Versys 650 as an on-road bike that provides a comfortable ride, like the Versys 1000. The Versys 650’s seat height is 840mm; 35mm taller than the Ninja 650.  For braking, the Versys 650 gets dual petal discs upfront and a single rotor disc brake at rear.

Kawasaki also provides 170mm ground clearance on the Versys 650, whereas in comparison, the Ninja 650’s ground clearance is 130mm. The Versys 650 will make for a good touring motorcycle in India, one that is quick enough for our roads, yet comfortable for both the rider and pillion.
