Great Wall Motors debuts Haval and GWM EV brands in India

Showcasing the Concept H and Vision 2025 concept, along with a slew of production vehicles and future technology, the automotive giant has started its India journey in right earnest.

Automotive goliath Great Wall Motors (GWM) made its India debut with a bang at the 2020 Auto Expo today. The carmaker not just announced its grand plans for our market moving forward, but also introduced two of its brands that will launch in the country in 2021.

GWM, which first started operations in 1984, has moved from strength to strength since then and is today ranked as one of China's most valuable companies. Headquartered in Baoding, about 150km south of Beijing, it is China's largest SUV maker and has a stable four brands - GWM EV (for electric vehicles), Haval and Wey (for SUVs) and GWM Pickup (for pickup trucks).It is the former two that broke cover at India's premier motor show.

Speaking on the occasion Hardeep Singh Brar, Director (Sales & Marketing) for the Indian Subsidiary of GWM said, “India has become one of the world's fastest growing major economies, and the auto market is promising, making it a preferred investment destination for most auto companies. At this 15th edition of the Auto Expo 2020, we are introducing our Global Intelligent SUV Expert brand – HAVAL and plan to cover the complete range of SUVs which will be the preferred choice of the young, dynamic and new generation consumers of India.”

With SUVs and electric vehicles being the current buzzwords, the Chinese company has decided to build on the momentum and leverage the strengths of Haval and GWM EV for spearheading its way into the challenging, yet rewarding, Indian auto industry. GWM intends to launch a complete range of SUVs from Haval that will cover all segments and appeal especially to the youth who are driving market growth. Numerous products under the GWM EV banner will also be introduced to realise the shift to a more sustainable future.

In addition to showcasing models being evaluated for a prospective launch in our market, the firm vowed the crowd by revealing two stunning concepts — the Haval Concept H and the Vision 2025, which made its India debut. GWM also highlighted its push towards innovation and intelligence through numerous sessions at its pavilion which attracted hoards of curious visitors.

In terms of its corporate roadmap, the Chinese major plans to invest USD 1 billion (about Rs 7,000 crore) in India in a phased manner across different verticals including R&D, vehicle manufacturing, component manufacturing and production of electric drives and batteries. This will help in the generation of around 3,000 direct employment opportunities.

Earlier this year, GWMs inked an agreement with General Motors to acquire the latter's Talegaon production facility to begin its India innings and the company has further revealed the the acquisition will be complete in H2 2020, just in time for product rollout the year after.

In anticipation of its market launch in 2021, the company gave the eagerly awaiting visitors a taste of its vast product portfolio. Headlining the lineup were the Concept H plug-in hybrid and Vision 2025 EV concept. The concepts showcased what the automaker has in store. Their advanced propulsion systems, evolved driver assistance technologies and striking designs had everyone on their toes. The firm also revealed that the Concept H previews a future mid-size SUV from the brand, while the Vision 2025 debuts autonomous capabilities for completely taking over driving responsibilities from you.

The Haval F7, F7x SUV-coupe and F5 formed a triad of SUV models exhibiting superior quality levels, exciting designs and the promise of powerful performance - an amalgamation of characteristics never seen in the segment before. The full-size, three-row Haval H9 all-terrain SUV blends true off-road prowess with a luxurious cabin and features.

In a nod towards sustainable mobility, GWM EV displayed the iQ electric fastback sedan and R1 electric hatchback. Equipped with high capacity batteries and powerful motors capable of delivering an exhilarating drive combined with phenomenal range, the EVs are on a mission to prove that the future can be both sustainable and exciting.

Based on its theme of 'Intelligent Mobility Redefined', GWM also had interactive sessions that highlighted the its technological strengths. The EV Tech zone showcased its advanced battery, motor and electric platform engineering capabilities. Haval had an Intelligent Cockpit setup that leveraged the company's progress in AI and IoT for a seamless integration between cars and homes. An Intelligent Safety corner further highlighted GWM's intense focus on active and passive safety technologies.

Great Wall Motor's first outing in India certainly proved that the company has the show to match the go. It's just a short wait before we get to to experience the true power of the colossus.
