In the October issue of Autocar India, we celebrate the revival of two icons – Jeep, and the Royal Enfield café racer. We also celebrate great value, with the feature-packed Grand i10, the entry-level Skoda Octavias, Datsun’s new sub-6-lakh MPV and the affordable (relatively) BMW 1-series and Mercedes A-class. You won’t want to put this one down once you’ve picked it up.

    Jeep Grand Cherokee and Wrangler
Most people in India associate Jeeps with tough Mahindra off-roaders that have been around since WWII. However, the real Jeep – owned by Chrysler – makes stylish luxury SUVs. Now, thanks to Fiat, that Jeep is coming to India, and we’ve got our hands on its first two models – the mammoth Grand Cherokee, and the rugged Wrangler Unlimited.

    Hyundai Grand i10
We didn’t think there was room between Hyundai’s i10 and i20 for another hatchback, but the company has squeezed one in there anyway. And it really is the best of both worlds – space, premium features and quality from the i20, and compactness and affordability of the i10. Oh, and there’s a brand new diesel engine. Read our full road test for the details.

    BMW 1-series vs Mercedes-Benz A-class
Time to test BMW’s claim – is rear-wheel-drive really better than front-wheel-drive in the real world of luxury hatchbacks? And is the 1-series’ driver focus really enough to edge it ahead of the unquestionably stunning Mercedes A-class. We have a road test and a comparison, just to find out.

    Frankfurt motor show
One of the biggest and most important motor shows in the world has just gone by, and we were there, darting hurriedly from stand to stand to bring you an in-depth report. As ever, it was an exciting mix of fantastical concepts, stunning sports cars and enough electric cars to drain your city’s power grid.

    Datsun Go+
That innocuous little ‘+’ sign at the end signifies a lot. It means that thanks to some relatively inexpensive engineering from Datsun, the Go hatchback has been stretched into a seven-seat MPV. And the best bit? It’s still less than four metres long, so it’s classified as a small car!

    Manual Skoda Octavias
Last month, we got behind the wheel of Skoda’s top-of-the-line, DSG-equipped 1.8 TSI and 2.0 TDI Octavias, and this time we’re at the other end of the spectrum, driving the entry-level 1.4 TSI and 2.0 TDI manual – the ones that the majority of people will actually end up buying.

    Mahindra MGP30
We’ve seen before how you have to recalibrate your senses to drive a racing car, and this month we found that it’s twice as difficult to do when you ride a racing bike. Mahindra’s Moto3 bike is what it must be like to be strapped to a jet turbine, and we’ve come away with our lives permanently altered.

    Royal Enfield Continental GT
A homage to the legendary café racer from days gone by, the new Continental GT is a modern bike wrapped in classic clothing. If you thought RE’s regular range harkened back to the past, you haven’t seen anything yet. However, it also looks to the future, and shows that the company can make more than the same handful of cookie-cutter models.

    Motorsport
Along with our usual round up of news, race reports and insightful columns from the world of motorsport, we’ve also got a very interesting feature that recognises some of the wizards that worked behind the scenes over the years to make F1 the pinnacle of motoring technology, as it is today.
