The festive season is an auspicious time to buy a new car and many will have their minds set on new set of wheels to grace their driveway. However, there’s so much exciting new metal headed to Indian showrooms over the next few months (a few are even going on sale as you read this) that perhaps it’s worth reading our extensive preview before putting down that deposit. We’ve also tested some important new cars and bikes this month, and previewed the country’s biggest motorsport event – the Indian F1 GP.

    SsangYong Rexton

Mahindra & Mahindra is on a roll lately. Hot on the heels of the already successful Quanto mini-MPV, comes the company’s new flagship luxury SUV – the Rexton. It may wear a SsangYong badge on its nose, but at Rs 17.7 lakh, the value it offers is very Mahindra. Toyota, Mitsubishi and Ford should be worried.

    Maruti Alto 800

How do you make a sequel to the country’s best-selling car? A selection of careful but significant updates to the tried and tested Alto formula have led to the new Maruti Suzuki Alto 800. Will it replicate the success of its popular forebear? We sure think so.

    Tata Safari Storme

Although it looks only mildly facelifted, the Tata Safari Storme is a completely new car. Under the familiar looking body sits the hydroformed X2 chassis from the Aria, heavily updated suspension and a much improved 2.2-litre DiCor engine. It really is new wine in an old bottle.

    Porsche 911

Like the Storme, it takes a keen eye to recognise that this is an entirely new Porsche 911. The classic silhouette remains with subtle changes to the details. However, what hasn’t changed is this car’s core formula – it still remains one of the most usable sportscars around.

    Honda Brio A/T vs Hyundai i10 A/T

With the amount of traffic Indian motorists have to contend with these days, it’s no wonder automatic-gearbox cars are becoming more popular, even in lower segments. The latest entry, the Honda Brio A/T, takes on the popular Hyundai i10 A/T, and we find out which of the two gives you more convenience for your buck.

    Nissan: The Dark Horse

Nissan has big plans for India, including taking the fight to Maruti, Tata and Hyundai at the budget end of the market with its upcoming Datsun sub-brand. We tell all in our in-depth look at Nissan’s agenda for the next few years.

    Paris Motor Show 2012

Supercars were back in focus at this year’s Paris motor show, with both McLaren and Ferrari previewing their future halo hypercars – the P1 and the F70. Hot hatchbacks were another big attraction, as were hybrids and electric cars. And it wouldn’t be Paris without at least one completely zany concept.

    Jaguar F-type

It may have only taken its first bow at the Paris show, but we’ve already got an in-depth look at Jaguar’s upcoming two-seat sportscar, the F-type. A thoroughly modern reimagining of the original E-type, it will go head to head with the Porsche Boxster, Cayman and 911.

    Yamaha Ray

Japanese two-wheeler giant Yamaha takes its first crack at a scooter for the Indian market. Trendy and stylish it may be, but does it have the substance to live up to the performance-oriented reputation that Yamaha has here in India?

    Royal Enfield Thunderbird 500

The new Thunderbird 500 is more than just a heart transplant. It gets a number of modern updates to keep it relevant in the rapidly advancing Indian motorcycle market, but retains the evocative character that makes all Royal Enfield motorcycles so popular.

    Motorsport

The Indian GP is just around the corner, and we’ve got an exhaustive preview of what you can expect to see at this year’s race. Plus, we speak to Indian motorsport’s rising young driver Shahaan Engineer following his remarkable weekend at the Formula NEC. And our usual array of news and race coverage.
