Well diesel engines are improving at a fast pace but they have still not caught up with the petrol engined ones.
Case in point, compare the best small diesel and petrol engines available in India, 1.3 MJD and the 1.2 Vtec. Both churn out 90 bhp but smoothness of the engine and the refinement are way ahead in the Vtec. |

Honda i-VTEC (1.2L, 1.5L,1.8L,2.4L, 3.5L) are the most technically advanced engines available. Probably the most refined and fuel efficient cars in their respective segments.

I drove the Jazz recently. I have to agree with rangc about the VTEC engine.
Honda probably puts in some magic potion instead of the usual oil because the performance of that engine was way superior than I have experienced in any other 1.2L engine.
