Today
we were to head to the holy town of Varanasi on the
banks of the Ganges. The distance is about 260kms and
like yesterday we took the NH2. Four lanes, a divider
and sparse traffic are a perfect recipe for a good driving
experience as well as extracting good fuel economy.
Since the distance wasn’t much, we decided to
leave a little late at around 12 noon. Today we had
packed some sandwiches from the hotel itself. This helped
us save a lot of time. Each stop, even if for half an
hour can make you lose a lot of kilometers especially
on a high speed road. Keeping a constant pace of 80kph,
we were covering distance at a fair rate. It wasn’t
long when we were hitting the outskirts of Varanasi
and finally entered the town at around 5pm in the evening.
On tanking up, the lead Ikon not surprisingly had achieved
34.92kpl and this was with ample aircon usage. The second
Ikon managed 27.56kpl with full time AC. The only glitch
on this sector was the directions to our hotel. We circled
around our hotel for a good half hour thanks to our
confused GPS system simply because the map didn’t
have all the roads of Varanasi. On resorting to the
old fashioned way of asking for directions from a passerby,
it took us all of five minutes to reach our hotel. Moral
of the story, don’t completely rely on modern
technology.
