Tata 45X concept: 5 things you need to know

After many teasers, Tata showcased its new premium hatchback in near-production concept form at the 2018 Auto Expo. While all the details haven't been revealed yet, here are the key features of the upcoming hatchback, codenamed 45X.

It’s based on a new platform
Based on Tata’s new AMP (Advanced Modular Platform) underpinnings, which the 45X will share with the upcoming mid-size sedan (scheduled to debut soon at Geneva), the concept wowed the Auto Expo audience with its styling. Tata has used an evolution of its Impact design language (now suffixed with 2.0), which means the hatchback sports a strong and confident stance, with slim headlamps and a well-defined ‘humanity line’ that links the lights and grille. The Indian carmaker had revealed that cars featuring Impact Design 2.0 will have segment-leading wheel sizes, and the show car at the expo seemed to stand on 18-inchers. However, the wheel size, along with the overall styling, is expected to be toned down slightly for the production-spec version.

But considering the Nexon followed its concept quite closely in terms of design, expect the same of the production-spec 45X.

The insides are a bit of a mystery
The 45X at the Auto Expo was displayed behind a glass case in an attempt to keep the cabin under wraps. But we expect the hatchback to sport a clutter-free design, with a focus on practicality and connectivity.

Expect to find the Revotron and Revotorq engines
While no details have been revealed about the engines, expect more powerful versions of the 1.2-litre Revotron petrol and 1.5-litre Revotorq diesel motors. The Nexon’s 110hp version of those engines may be a good fit. For the transmission, the Nexon’s six-speed manual is expected, however, the currently under-development twin-clutch automatic may also feature.

It’s got the i20 in its sights
Entering the competitive premium hatchback segment, the production 45X will compete against the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Hyundai i20, and Honda Jazz. Typical of Tata, expect pricing to undercut its rivals, similar to how the petrol versions of the Tiago undercuts the Celerio.

It’s going to be here soon
Tata is expected to launch the new premium hatchback in 2019. More details about the full-production version will be revealed closer to the launch date.
