2019 Ford Figo facelift price, fuel efficiency comparison

The Ford Figo facelift has finally launched in India, with prices starting at Rs 5.15 lakh and going up to Rs 8.09 lakh (ex-showroom, pan-India). Besides the new-look exteriors and updates to the cabin, one of the highlights of the new Figo is that there are two new petrol engines, both shared with the Aspire facelift.

Both the three-cylinder engines (the 1.2-litre and 1.5-litre are from Ford’s Dragon series) are more powerful than the previously available four-cylinder motors by 8hp and 11hp, respectively. The other mechanical change is that the expensive dual-clutch automatic transmission has been replaced by a more cost effective torque convertor unit. Interestingly, the smaller 1.2-litre engine is more fuel efficient than the older 1.2-litre motor, while the new petrol-automatic combination sees the mileage figure reduce by 0.7kpl compared to the outgoing model’s. The previously offered 100hp, 1.5-litre diesel engine continues unchanged, though there is a new 5-speed manual gearbox. However, economy figures on the new Figo diesel are also slightly down compared to pre-facelift model.

Seeing as new Ford Figo prices are lower than the outgoing model’s, the hatchback will rival the same cars – the Maruti Suzuki Swift, Hyundai Grand i10 and Volkswagen Polo. As fuel-efficiency and price can make or break a buying decision, we’ve brought the four hatchbacks together for a comparison, on paper.

Let’s see how the new Ford Figo does against its rivals in terms of fuel efficiency.

Based on the table above, the Figo 1.2 petrol fairs well against other manual transmission petrol’s as it has betters the figures posted by the VW Polo and Hyundai Grand i10 petrol and only loses out to the Maruti Suzuki Swift. The Figo 1.5 petrol automatic on the other hand has the lowest figures of the petrol automatics as it is outperformed by the Swift, Grand i10 and Polo automatics. However, it is worth noting that the Figo has the largest displacement engine among all the petrol automatics.

The 100hp, 1.5-litre Figo diesel also holds its own among the competition. It’s quite a bit more efficient than the Volkswagen Polo diesel (in standard and GT TDI forms) and marginally more than Hyundai Grand i10 diesel. As with the petrol models, it is the Swift diesel that takes the lead in terms of economy. The Maruti has the added advantage of being the only model here to have a diesel-automatic option too

Starting prices for the new Ford Figo are now much closer to the Maruti Suzuki Swift and Hyundai Grand i10, while undercutting the Volkswagen Polo prices significantly. The well-equipped top-spec variant of the Ford Figo is priced quite competitively - it costs about Rs 60,000 less than the top-spec Swift, but is about Rs 12,000-Rs 29,000 more than the range-topping Grand i10, depending on the engine option. While the Figo petrol-automatic is more expensive than the Swift and Grand i10 petrol-autos, the Ford costs nearly Rs 1.5 lakh less than the VW Polo GT TSI.
