Volkswagen India recalls 389 Polo units for handbrake issue

Volkswagen India has issued a voluntary recall of 389 units of its Polo hatchback to inspect and repair the handbrake mechanism. The vehicles affected in this recall are from a single batch of production from September 2015.

The carmaker’s analysis revealed that a batch of handbrake cable retention levers in the rear brake line of the affected cars might break under certain conditions.

“In the context of a voluntary safety measure, Volkswagen Passenger Cars in India is calling 389 Polo cars from a single batch of production from the month of September 2015 for inspection and preventive repair of the handbrake mechanism. The Quality Assurance department of Volkswagen India has determined that under certain conditions, the handbrake mechanism would lose effectiveness,” according to a statement released by the carmaker.

Volkswagen Passenger Cars India said that it will contact the customers who own the identified vehicles to come for an inspection and preventive repair. The repair will be carried out at no additional cost to the affected Polo customers.

The move comes a day after Volkwagen India stopped the delivery of all variants of its Polo hatchback in the country with immediate effect citing a “technical reason”. It then clarified that the move had nothing to do with the emission scandal.

The carmaker will resume delivery of the Polo cars that were put on hold yesterday as and when the
    inspection and repair is complete.
