Official sales numbers seem to be backing up the popularity of Tata’s recently launched compact sedan, the Zest. Although Tata’s overall passenger car sales in October this year saw a 12 percent fall year-on-year, the Zest has been able to rake in good numbers and display positive performance.

The Tata Zest compact sedan sold 3,524 units during the month, the third highest sold car in the segment. It outsold the Honda Amaze, which saw sales of 3,482 units in the month. Sales of these cars over the next month or two will be a litmus test as to whether the Zest's performance in October was a just a one-off or is it truly going to continue selling in high numbers.

However, the Maruti Dzire continues to be at the top of the mountain with sales of around 18,000 units in October. The Hyundai Xcent sold the second most numbers - over 4,600 units.
