Tata Motors breathes life into Nano with GenX

Tata Motors on Tuesday unveiled an updated version of its Nano hatchback, the Nano GenX, complete with a new look and very aggressive pricing. The launch is set to create ripples in the entry level car segment simply because no other car manufacturer has ever offered an option of an Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) gearbox at this price point before.

With the Nano GenX, it looks like Tata Motors have thrown in a lot of new stuff to make it look like an upmarket version of the original car. Moreover, the company has also cleared out its old inventory to make way for the brand new iteration of its small car and is banking on the GenX to revive volumes.

“Entry level segment will continue to grow...you have keep on offering smart features. For instance, the features that are available in big cars can be offered in smaller cars,” Mayank Pareek, President, Passenger Vehicle Business Unit, Tata Motors Ltd said.

Tata Motors has priced the base manual version of the Nano GenX at Rs 1.99 lakh, around Rs 70,000 lower than its closest rival, the Alto 800. Moreover, the Nano XMA (AMT) trim is nearly Rs 170,000 lower than the Alto K10 AMT. Although the K10 isn’t a direct competitor to the GenX, it is the closest entry level hatch with that comes with automatic gearbox.

Apart from pricing it cheaper, Tata has packaged the Nano in a much trendier way this time around targeting the “25-35” age group. The car that already received a Bluetooth audio system with a host of connectivity features with a previous update now gets a host of exterior changes such as a new bumper, fog lights, spoiler and grille.

But the company’s efforts at shedding its ‘cheap’ car image haven’t come cheap. The automobile conglomerate has invested upwards of $1 billion in the Nano project, and according to industry sources, it is losing considerable money on every car it sells.

However, it seems like Tata Motors has come close to sprucing up its image that took some beating when the car first came out in March 2009. The Nano GenX might still have flaws but it seems like a more compelling proposition this time around.
