SsangYong Rexton RX6 vs Toyota Fortuner 4X4 MT: Specifications comparison

Rexton RX6 vs Fortuner 4X4 MT.

Mahindra has just launched the SsangYong Rexton RX6 variant which comes equipped with a substantial features list along with manual transmission and four-wheel drive. Apart from being powered by a Mercedes-sourced engine, the SsangYong Rexton sports an attractive price tag too. But does it have what it takes to put up a fight against the seemingly invincible Toyota Fortuner 4X4 MT? We compare the specifications of these two premium, manual transmission-equipped, 4X4 SUVs.

    The money factor

The SsangYong Rexton RX6 is priced at Rs 19.96 lakh while the Toyota Fortuner 4X4 MT retails for Rs 23.06 lakh (all prices ex-showroom, Delhi).

    Under the hood

The Toyota Fortuner is powered by a 2982cc, four-cylinder, diesel engine which makes 168bhp and 35kgm of torque. In comparison, the SsangYong Rexton RX6 gets a 2696cc, five-cylinder diesel engine that produces 162bhp and 34.67kgm of torque.

    Equipment on offer

As expected from a premium SUV offering, the SsangYong Rexton RX6 comes equipped with a long list of features. It gets electrically adjustable, folding and heated wing mirrors along with memory function. It rides on ten-spoke, 16-inch alloy wheels and comes with chrome side mouldings. It also features an electric sunroof with tilt/open function and sunblind, and LED tail-lamps.

Step inside the Rexton RX6 and you are greeted by a dual tone beige and black interiors with metal grain accents and a touchscreen six-speaker infotainment system with MP3, DVD, USB and aux-in compatibility and video function. It even doubles up as a navigation system with preloaded maps. Additionally, it gets rear parking sensors, automatic headlamps and an eight-way electronically adjustable driver’s seat with memory function.

The Rexton RX6 also comes equipped with rain sensing wipers, cruise control, rear windscreen defogger, washer and wiper. On the safety front, it offers electronic stability program, active rollover protection and hill descent control.

The Toyota Fortuner 4X4 MT is pretty well equipped too. It gets electrical adjustable wing mirrors with  turn indicators, 12-spoke, 17-inch alloy wheels, six-way electronically adjustable driver seat and a six speaker LCD touchscreen with DVD, USB and aux-in compatibility. It also gets Bluetooth along with audio and telephony controls on the steering wheel and a rear camera. It even gets automatic HID headlamps with washer.

On the inside, the Fortuner 4X4 MT sports black wood finish panels, leather-wrapped steering wheel with wood finish, silver accents and leather-wrapped gear lever knob and transfer case knob. It comes equipped with safety features like electronic brake distribution, brake assist and vehicle stability control.

    A few similarities

Both the SsangYong Rexton RX6 and the Toyota Fortuner 4X4 MT get wing mirrors with integrated LED turn indicators, leather upholstery, keyless entry along with second and third row AC vents with blower controls. Both SUVs also have steering wheel with tilt function and audio controls, fully automatic climate control system, dual front and side airbags, engine immobilizer and ABS.

    Space matters

In terms of dimensions, the brutish Fortuner measures 4705mm in length, 1840mm in width and 1850mm in height. The SsangYong Rexton is slightly longer and wider with a length of 4755mm and a width of 1900mm. It is shorter though, at 1785mm, than the Fortuner.

Since its launch, the Toyota Fortuner has been a popular choice among SUV buyers. It is rugged, has an imposing stance and can tackle any terrain without breaking a sweat. The SsangYong Rexton RX6 is a decent overall package. But it sports a price tag that is cheaper than the Fortuner by around Rs 3 lakh and comes equipped with a longer list of features. This makes the Rexton RX6 a true value-for-money proposition for those interested in a premium 4X4 SUV.
