The Suzuki iV-4 SUV concept will be shown at the Auto Expo.

The upcoming Auto Expo 2014 will play host to numerous concept cars from global and local manufacturers, which will spawn into production models in the near future. Here's a look at the best concept cars to watch out for at the upcoming Delhi Auto Expo.

    Datsun small car concept

Datsun has big plans for India and its range of value-centric cars is expected to be a big draw at the Auto Expo. On display will be the Go hatchback that will go on sale in March, and the Go+ MPV, a stretched version of the Go hatch. Datsun will also unveil a new small car concept at the Auto Expo that will give clues to the design of an upcoming entry-level hatchback (codename: i2), expected to go on sale in 2016 with an 800cc engine. The big news is, Datsun is working towards an incredibly aggressive target price of Rs 2-3 lakh, so this is certainly a model that deserves a close look.

    Honda Vision XS-1 concept

Honda will have an expansive display that will include the Jazz and Mobilio, both cars will go on sale shortly after the event. But, while the Mobilio will take on the Maruti Ertiga, Honda has been keen to bring in a larger MPV to India. However, the international-market Honda Freed was proving to be too expensive for our market. And it is this that has led to development work on a new MPV based on Honda’s new 2GA platform. To be unveiled at the Auto Expo as a concept, the MPV concept, called the Vision XS-1, is expected to be a seven-seater and about the same size as a Toyota Innova.

    Chevrolet Adra compact SUV concept

In India at the moment, small SUVs equal big sales. Chevrolet doesn’t want to miss the bus and will take the wraps off its own small SUV concept at the Auto Expo called the Adra. The Adra SUV concept will be based on General Motors’ Global Small Vehicle platform (also called Gamma 2) that underpins GM’s latest generation of small cars. In terms of size, Chevy’s small SUV of the future is expected to be midway between a Ford EcoSport and a Renault Duster.

    Maruti Suzuki IV-4

To give you a glimpse into what it's got in store for the future, Maruti will also display an SUV concept. The iV-4 SUV concept, first seen at the 2013 Frankfurt motor show, shares many details with Maruti’s XA Alpha concept that was one of the stars at the 2012 Auto Expo. You can tell the styling has been refined but the slotted grille, clamshell bonnet and big wheel arches remain. It’s safe to assume the new concept will give us the most concrete clues as far as the design of Maruti’s upcoming SUV (due in 2016) is concerned. Maruti’s stand will also feature another concept car along with the rest of the present range.

    Volkswagen Taigun

Seeing as how nearly every carmaker in India is jumping on the small SUV bandwagon, Volkswagen will have its own iteration at the Auto Expo in the form of the Taigun. First revealed at the Sao Paulo International Motor Show in 2012, the Taigun has been under consideration for India for quite some time. Though the model on display will be a concept, you can expect many elements to make it to the production version, scheduled to go on sale here in 2016. Those big wheel arches are likely to remain and the Taigun’s clean, uncluttered lines will appeal to those who find the Ford EcoSport a bit too radical. The concept’s dashboard is also appealing and is said to be inspired by today’s smartphones. While the concept shown earlier measured 3,859mm in length, VW is known to be working on a stretched version that will feature a longer wheelbase to free up more interior space, while still keeping the length under four metres. However, it remains to be seen which version of the Taigun will be displayed at the Auto Expo.

The concept shown in Sao Paulo came with a 108bhp, 1.0-litre, three-cylinder, turbo-petrol engine and this motor could be a possibility for India. VW is also developing a new family of diesel engines and a 1.4-litre, three-cylinder diesel could also be headed to India.

    Tata Jump concept

Tata Motors is all set to reveal its first sub-four metre compact SUV concept at the upcoming Auto Expo 2014. This new concept will be called the Tata Jump and will hit the Indian market in production form by next year.

The new Tata Jump concept is expected to be based on the Tata X1 platform which also forms base for the Tata Vista and the upcoming Falcon line-up which will also include the new Tata Bolt hatchback.  The Tata Jump is also expected to use engines from Tata’s new Revortron engine family. It will also get an all-new diesel engine which Tata Motors is developing in-house.
