The new Volvo XC90 SUV has been launched at a starting price of Rs 64.9 lakh for the Momentum trim. The top Inscription trim is priced at Rs 77.9 lakh (all prices, ex-showroom, Mumbai without Octroi). Dealers have already started accepting bookings at Rs 5 lakh with deliveries expected to begin in September.

The second-generation Volvo, based on an all-new scalable product architecture platform, is quite a looker as it gets a discernable grille coupled with T-shaped running lights, nicknamed ‘Thor’s Hammer’ by the design team.

At its heart is the latest-generation 2.0-litre, four-cylinder D5 diesel engine churning out 225bhp with 48kgm of pulling power, as against the outgoing XC90’s 2.4-litre, five-cylinder diesel. Power is sent to all four wheels via the eight-speed automatic gearbox. The 400bhp T8 petrol-electric plug-in hybrid option is expected some time next year.

Inside, the company says the XC90 SUV has the most luxurious interiors ever designed for a car bearing the Volvo badge. The gear-lever knob is made of crystal glass and there are diamond-cut controls for the start/stop button and volume control. Besides, a tablet-like touchscreen control console, a virtually button-free dash and an interior made using soft leather and wood go about cocooning the occupants in luxury.

The Momentum trim gets driver’s seat adjust with memory function, panoramic sunroof, a 12.3-inch screen in the instrument cluster, park assist and hill descent control.

Furthermore, the Inscription gets a 19-speaker Bowers and Wilkins audio system, air suspension, heads-up display, ventilated front seats and Nappa leather upholstery.

The XC90 gets two-step airbags, automatic height adjusted front seat belts and an Intelligent Driver information system, among others, as standard on both the XC90 trims.

However, the XC90 for India may not get some of the safety features because of radar frequency restrictions put in place by the government. "We were not able to get the radar-based safety features to the Indian version of the XC90. However, the car will have the radar based safety functions but will remain disabled till the government gives a go ahead," Tomas Ernberg, managing director, Volvo Auto India said.

Joining the growing Volvo India line-up, will be the V40 hatchback. Volvo plans to launch the luxury hatchback in Chennai, in June. To support its product offensive, the Swedish carmaker is also working to increase its reach. A number of new showrooms have been planned across the country; the company is eyeing as many as 40 dealers in India by the end of 2016. Volvo is also trying to target Tier III cities and small towns via road shows and test drives.

The company is looking to sell around 2,000 cars annually and to that end, is considering local assembly to keep prices competitive.
