New Mahindra Scorpio vs rivals: Price comparison

    New Mahindra Scorpio.

Mahindra has just launched its second-generation Scorpio in India at a starting price of Rs 7.98 lakh for the base S2 trim while the top S10 4WD trim is priced at Rs 12.54 lakh (all prices, ex-showroom, Mumbai). The new Mahindra Scorpio gets an all-new chassis, gearbox and suspension but retains the same engines as the outgoing model. There are also exterior styling and interior updates on the new car.

So, how does it compare against its competitors like Tata Safari Storme, the Tata Aria and Mahindra's own XUV500 on the pricing front? Here're the details.

    Base trims

The Mahindra Scorpio is available in two base trims – S2 and S4. The S2 trim is powered by the 2.5-litre, m2DiCr diesel engine which makes 75bhp while the S4 trim gets the 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine which is good for 120bhp. The S2 is available only with two-wheel-drive as standard. However, the S4 trim is available in two-wheel drive and four-wheel-drive options.

In comparison, the Tata Safari Storme, Tata Aria and the Mahindra's XUV500 have just one diesel motor on offer. These three SUVs get base trims only as two-wheel-drive models.

The new Scorpio S2 trim is priced at Rs 7.98 lakh while the S4 2WD trim retails for Rs 8.6 lakh.

The entry-level Tata Safari Storme LX 4X2 carries a price tag of Rs 10.35 lakh. That's a whopping Rs 2.37 lakh more expensive than the Scorpio S2 trim and Rs 1.75 lakh more than the S4 4x2.

The base Tata Aria Pure LX trim costs Rs 10.13 lakh. Once again, the Scorpio trims turns out to be substantially cheaper, S2 by around Rs 2.15 lakh, while the Scorpio S4 4x2 trim costs Rs 1.53 lakh less.

The Mahindra XUV500 W4 is priced at Rs 11.30 lakh which makes it pricier than the S2 and S4 4x2 trims by Rs 3.32 lakh and Rs 2.7 lakh, respectively.

    Middle trims

The Mahindra Scorpio S6 Plus trim is priced at Rs 10.04 lakh. There is also a less expensive S6 trim priced at Rs 9.77 lakh, that misses out on driver airbag and ABS as compared to the S6 Plus trim.

In comparison, the Safari Storme EX 4X2 is priced at Rs 11.14 lakh, around Rs 1.1 lakh more expensive than the Scorpio S6 Plus.

With a price tag of Rs 12.37 lakh, the Tata Aria Pleasure 4X2 trim is around Rs 2.33 lakh more expensive than the Scorpio S6 Plus trim.

The Mahindra XUV500 W6 trim costs Rs 12.50 lakh which makes it dearer than the Scorpio S6 Plus by around Rs 2.46 lakh.

    Top trims

Like the new Mahindra Scorpio, the top Tata Safari Storme VX and the Mahindra XUV500 W8 trims are available with the option of both two-wheel and four-wheel-drive. However, the top Tata Aria Pride trim gets four-wheel-drive as standard.

The Mahindra Scorpio S10 4x2 is priced at Rs 11.46 lakh. The Safari Storme VX 4x2 carries a price tag of Rs 12.68 lakh which is around Rs 1.22 lakh more expensive than the Scorpio S10 4X2.

In comparison, the XUV500 W8 4x2 costs Rs 14.15 lakh. That makes the Scorpio S10 cheaper by around Rs 2.69 lakh.

While the Mahindra Scorpio S10 4x4 costs Rs 12.54 lakh, the Safari Storme VX 4X4 costs Rs 13.99 lakh which makes it around Rs 1.45 lakh more expensive.

A price tag of Rs 15.25 lakh makes the Tata Aria Pride 4x4 dearer than the Scorpio S10 4X4 by a massive Rs 2.71 lakh.

In comparison, the Mahindra XUV500 4x4 is priced at Rs 15.29 lakh which is around Rs 2.75 lakh more expensive than the Scorpio S10 4X4.

    How it all pans out

The new Mahindra Scorpio costs substantially less than the Tata Safari Storme, Tata Aria and the Mahindra XUV across all trim levels. Mahindra has priced the Scorpio attractively which is likely to attract buyers into showrooms. Does this translate to better sales for the already-popular SUV, we’ll have to wait and watch.
