The new Lexus RX SUV has been unveiled at the New York auto show. This fourth-generation car stands slightly longer, wider and taller than the current model. It gets Lexus’ new large spindle grille up front, while flared wheel arches and new fog lights are also featured. At the rear, there are new L-shaped tail-light clusters. The RX rides on 20-inch alloy wheels, which can be customised with coloured inserts.

Lexus claims the RX’s structure is now stiffer and more stable than before, and the SUV will now handle much better.

In the cabin, a 12.3-inch infotainment screen features alongside a new heads-up display and panoramic sunroof. Interior space is claimed to have been increased thanks to the RX’s extended wheelbase — which is 50mm longer than before.

Engine options in the new RX will include a 3.5-litre V6 petrol making around 300bhp, which will be matched with a new, eight-speed automatic transmission. The current car's hybrid powertrain has been carried over with a bit of re-tuning. Total output from the system will be around 300bhp. Lexus says both powertrains have been tweaked to improve efficiency. All RX models will be equipped with all-wheel-drive systems.

Other new features on the RX include Lexus’s Safety System+, which uses a combination of existing technologies such as pre-emergency braking, lane departure warning and automatic high-beam lights. The system also includes a new lane-keeping assistance feature, and also works with the car’s adaptive cruise control. Optional safety features include adaptive lighting, a panoramic view camera system and a blind-spot monitoring system.

The RX will also get a sportier F-Sport version. It has a new mesh for the grille and front bumper, unique alloy wheel designs and a different instrument cluster. The car also comes with paddle shifters. Mechanically, the F-Sport has a new active stabiliser system, which helps keep the car level through corners, as well as adaptive variable suspension. Drivers can also choose the new Sport S+ driving mode from the various settings available.

This new SUV goes on sale in global markets towards the end of the year. In the markets where it will be available, the Lexus RX SUV will take on the likes of the Range Rover Sport and the BMW X5.
