Maruti Swift celebrates 10 years and high sales

Maruti Suzuki has announced that its Swift hatchback – which is celebrating 10 years of production in India – has recorded cumulative sales of 1.3 million units in the domestic market.

Launched in May 2005 with a 1.3-litre petrol engine, the Swift gained its first diesel engine in 2007 in the form of the Fiat-sourced 1.3-litre DDiS unit. In 2010, the Maruti Swift underwent a minor facelift with the older 1.3-litre motor being replaced by the 1.2-litre K-series engine.

The following year, Maruti launched the second generation of the car and sales picked up stronger than before. The original Swift crossed the 5,00,000 units mark in 2010, but the second generation pushed this number to over 10,00,000 units by September 2013. Last year, the second-generation car underwent its first facelift with minor tweaks to the exterior and interior, added features and tweaks to the engines to improve mileage.

May 2015 marks the 10-year anniversary for the model in the Indian market and also a major milestone for the company as the car has achieved total sales amounting to 1.3 million units, since its original launch in 2005.
