Maruti Ciaz SHVS diesel hybrid launched at Rs 8.23 lakh

Maruti has launched the Ciaz SHVS (Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki) diesel with prices starting from Rs 8.23 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The Ciaz SHVS gets the addition of micro-hybrid technology that includes a stop-start technology, brake energy recuperation and Engine Power Assist systems.

This technology makes it the most fuel-efficient car in India at 28.09kpl, going a step ahead of even the two-cylinder Celerio diesel at 27.62kpl. In fact, so confident is Maruti of this product, it has discontinued the standard car.

The Ciaz SHVS is powered by Maruti’s tried and tested 1.3-litre DDiS diesel engine. The newly introduced start-stop technology uses an integrated starter generator (ISG) that functions as a battery charger during braking and acts as the starter motor when the stop-start technology is in use. The car also gets an electric boost via the Engine Power Assist system where the ISG supplements the engine’s power during acceleration. This happens around 2,500rpm. The car also comes equipped with a gear shift indicator. To help support the hybrid system, the Ciaz SHVS gets the addition of a new high-capacity battery. The system uses a separate ‘U’ belt driven starter/generator that also uses an additional idler and tensioner belt system to keep the belt firmly on the pulley.

On the whole, the Ciaz SHVS looks like the regular Ciaz, but with a SHVS badge on the boot lid and additional lights on the instrument cluster. The car carries over the same trim levels and features as the regular Ciaz.

The Maruti Ciaz SHVS rivals the likes of the Honda City, Hyundai Verna and the Volkswagen Vento and becomes the first car in the segment to feature the mild-hybrid technology.

The Ciaz SHVS is marginally cheaper than the outgoing car thanks to the FAME hybrid and electric car initiative by the Government of India.

Maruti also introduced a new trim level on the CIaz with the VXi(O) and VDi(O). The trim is positioned above the base VXi and VDi trim respectively and gets the addition of dual airbags, ABS and seatbelt pre-tensioners. The base VXi and VDi trim gets the addition of a driver airbag. This means that all versions of the Ciaz now come with driver airbag as standard.

Here is a look at the prices of the Maruti Ciaz SHVS vs its rivals:
