Mahindra & Mahindra has sold one lakh units of its XUV500 SUV. The SUV, launched here in September 2011, was developed and designed at the carmaker's R&D facility in Chennai.

The XUV500 has received numerous auto industry awards, including the Bloomberg TV India Autocar 'SUV of the year' award.

The sales milestone is evidence of the carmaker's smart marketing. The carmaker has kept alive interest in the SUV by launching new colours, special editions and last year, it also launched a more affordable base variant called the XUV500 W4.

Sometime in the next year, M&M is also reportedly going to launch an automatic version of the SUV, a move that's expected to further improve its fortunes.
