Made-in-India new BMW 5-series production starts

BMW has started series production of the new 5-series sedan at its Chennai plant. The new BMW 5-series will see a market launch on June 29, 2017. The seventh-generation G30 avatar will be available in two diesel variants – 520d Luxury line and 530d M Sport – and in a petrol, 530i Sportline, variant.

Out of the two diesels, the 1,995cc, four-cylinder in the 520d will produce 190hp at 4,000rpm and 400Nm of torque from as low as 1,750rpm. The sportier 530d will come with a 2,993cc, six-cylinder engine producing 265hp and 620Nm of torque, along with a claimed 0-100kph acceleration time of 5.7sec. The 530i is the only petrol on offer and will be powered by a 1,998cc, four-cylinder, turbo-petrol engine churning 252hp and 350Nm of torque, with a claimed 0-100kph acceleration time of 6.2sec. All three engines are mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Overall, the new 'Five' is a bit larger than the outgoing car, measuring 4,936mm in length, 1,868mm in width and 1,479mm in height, and has a slightly longer 2,975mm wheelbase too. BMW has managed to make the new 5-series up to 100 kg lighter with increased use of aluminium and high-strength steel. This has also helped increase the new car’s overall rigidity.

BMW has packed in a lot of kit in the new 5-series with features like a 10.25-inch touchscreen with gesture control, a wireless phone charger and a remote parking system (similar to the 7-series). There’s a new heads-up display that is 70 percent bigger than before and displays maps, telephone listings, music tracks and more. Driving aids include dynamic stability control, corner brake control, dry braking function, fading compensation as well as optional features like dynamic damper control and adaptive drive.
