BMW’s entire line-up of the four-cylinder S1000 range, which features the S1000RR supersport, the S1000R naked and the S1000XR adventure-style touring bikes has seen a few updates at the Intermot 2016 show in Cologne. While the updates to the supersport and tourer variants are minor, the naked S1000R has seen the most number of changes. Most of the changes are related to making the bikes Euro-IV compliant, but the S1000R and the S1000XR have seen a minor bump up in power as well.

    S1000R

The largest change to the S1000R naked has been a 4hp increase in power output. The 1,000cc four-cylinder motor now makes about 165hp of peak power coming in at 11,000rpm. But combined with a weight drop of about 3kg, you get a small, but significant improvement in the power-to-weight figure. This weight reduction has happened due to a smaller, lighter frame, which BMW claims offers enhanced rigidity and mechanical grip. There has been some minor bodywork change which includes a new Akrapovic titanium exhaust and a redesigned instrument cluster that’s easier to rear (which finally also features a temperature gauge). There have been some changes to reduce vibrations at the handlebars as well. BMW now offers a bunch of new optional equipment for the S1000R which includes HP Shift Assist Pro for clutchless upshifting and downshifting as well as ABS Pro offered in the Riding Modes Pro package. Also available as an option are HP forged alloy wheels which are about two-and-a-half kilos lighter than stock, as well as the Design Option wheels which feature red pinstriping.

    S1000XR

The adventure-touring styled S1000XR gets the same gains in horsepower that its naked sibling features, as well as reduced vibrations at the handlebars thanks to a redesigned fork bridge. BMW hasn’t mentioned if there has been a weight reduction in the bike or not, but its maximum payload has been increased to a whopping 444kg – that’s an extra 10kg for luggage or heavier pillions!

    S1000RR

The big daddy of the S1000 range and undoubtedly one of the best supersport bikes in the world, the S1000RR, has seen a couple of minor updates for 2017, the biggest of which is the inclusion of traction control as standard. The optional Riding Modes Pro programme also gets the new ABS Pro setting and buyers now get the option of buying the bike either with a passenger seat or a single seat with pillion cowl.
