Ford Mustang launched in India at Rs 65 lakh

Ford today launched the Mustang sportscar in India at a price of Rs 65 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The company will accept bookings for the Mustang in Mumbai and Delhi initially, and plans to include other cities next year.

On the outside, the Mustang gets plenty of retro touches on its nose and rear, in addition to a bulging bonnet and brawny wheel arches. Design features such as the wide shoulders, raked roofline and lengthy bonnet lend the Mustang a commanding muscular look.  It gets projector headlamps with an LED signature motif and retro-looking, vertically oriented 'three-bar' LED tail-lamps that mimic the 1964 original.

While the Mustang has always been left-hand-drive only, this sixth-generation car is the first one ever to be developed for right-hand-drive markets as well. Powering the Mustang GT is a 401hp 5.0-litre petrol V8 engine with a torque rating of 515Nm, mated to six-speed auto gearbox. The mechanicals can hurl the Mustang to a claimed top speed of 250kph. The best part of all is, the American muscle car can deliver all this performance running on regular 91 octane fuel, and special high-octane fuel is not necessary, as it is in many other sportscars sold here.

The Mustang uses an aviation-inspired interior theme, complete with airplane-like toggle switches on the centre console, but it's also got modern stuff like an eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Drivers can choose from four driving modes – Normal, Sport+, Track and Wet. It also comes with limited slip differential to improve traction and agility on slippery surfaces, but more interesting than that is a feature called 'Electronic Line Lock'. This allows the front brakes to be locked electronically, while leaving the rear tyres free to spin, which makes doing big, smoky burnouts remarkably easy; it's all part of the Mustang's Hollywood muscle car appeal.

Ford, which will import the Mustang to India as a CBU, has sold more than nine million units of the various generations of the car worldwide since it first went on sale in 1964.
