Fiat will launch the Avventura on October 21, and almost everything you need to know about Fiat’s upcoming crossover has already been spoken of. Closest rivals of the Avventura include the Volkswagen Cross Polo, Toyota Etios Cross and, the car it looks to tip, the immensely popular Ford EcoSport. We pit the Avventura against the rest to compare their mechanical specifications on paper.

    Heart of the matter

The Ford EcoSport and the Etios Cross come with the maximum number of engine options – two petrol engines and one diesel. The EcoSport gets the 1.0-litre Ecoboost engine that delivers 123.3bhp and 17.3kgm of torque. The 1.5-litre petrol delivers 109.9bhp and 14.2kgm of torque. The 1.5-litre diesel unit makes 89.8bhp and 20.8kgm. The Etios Cross is run by a 1.2-litre petrol engine making 79.1bhp and 10.6kgm of torque, or a 1.5-litre petrol making 88.5bhp and 13.5kgm of torque. The 1.4-litre diesel engine on the Etios Cross makes 67bhp of power and 17.3kgm of torque. In comparison, the Avventura comes with two engine options, a 1.4-litre petrol and a 1.3-litre diesel engine. The petrol engine makes 89bhp and 11.7kgm of torque, while the diesel makes 92bhp and 21.3kgm of torque. The Cross Polo comes with only one engine option, a 1.5-litre diesel engine that is good for 89bhp of power and 23.4kgm of torque.

The EcoSport, Etios Cross, Avventura and Cross Polo each have their engines mated to a 5-speed gearbox. The EcoSport, additionally, comes with a six-speed automatic transmission on the 1.5-litre petrol engine.

    Footprint fare

Moving onto the dimensions, the EcoSport is the longest at 3999mm, followed by the Avventura, which is 3989mm in length. The Cross Polo is 3987mm in length, followed by the Etios Cross at 3895mm. The EcoSport is the widest too, at 1765mm and is followed by the Etios Cross at 1735mm, Avventura at 1706mm and the Cross Polo at 1698mm. The EcoSport stands the tallest among the four, and measures 1708mm, Etios Cross is shorter at 1555mm, followed by the Avventura at 1542mm, and the Cross Polo is the shortest at a humble 1483mm. In line with the other dimensions, the EcoSport has the longest stride at 2520mm; the Avventura comes close at 2510mm. The Cross Polo breaks pattern here and has the second smallest wheelbase at 2469mm, followed by the Etios Cross at 2460mm.

Something essential for a bit of off-roading is ground clearance. The Avventura does well and rides the highest at 205mm; that is as much clearance as boasted by full-fledged SUVs. The EcoSport comes a close second at 200mm. Etios Cross clears the ground by 174mm, and the Cross Polo has the least ground clearance at 165mm.

    How do they stack up?

Frankly, it boils down to a two car battle. The Avventura’s biggest rival will prove to be the solid Ford EcoSport, and honestly it is almost impossible to say which car has the upper hand. One thing’s for sure though, the Avventura will not have it easy when it tries to nudge the well-established EcoSport.
