Bosch eyes growth in segments beyond mobility

The Indian arm of auto component and technology supplier Bosch recently showcased the latest smart solutions and innovations for several industry sectors beyond its bread-and-butter segment of mobility. While automobiles accounted for 85 percent of the company’s business in India in 2015, smart cities, mass transportation, construction, mining, packaging, energy and consumer goods, accounted for the remainder. The company sees good potential for growth in the aforementioned areas.

“In India we are seeing a lot of growth in sectors beyond mobility such as building technology, industrial technology and consumables. We are integrated in a worldwide engineering and manufacturing network which enables us to take solutions developed for other parts of the world and also to develop our own India-specific solutions,” said Steffen Berns, managing director, Bosch Limited and president of Bosch Group in India. Meanwhile, hardware will continue to remain at the core of its business even as the company sharpens its focus on end-to-end solutions and integrated services.

As a part of the smart city segment, the company aims to offer a host of solutions such as waste, water and energy management as well as urban mobility. “For instance, citizens can check the seats availability on the bus as it comes, the alternate transport options to reach their destination and just in case there is a sudden rush of passengers, the fleet operators can increase the frequency of bus and cabs on a real time basis,” Dhiraj Wali, Head Smart City, Bosch India said. The objective is to drive economic growth and improve the quality of life of the people, Wali added.

Bosch is also looking into Intelligent Parking System which enables commuters to find a space in crowded areas. According to the company, vehicles can identify available spaces by using sensors and connectivity hardware as they drive past.

The company aims to revamp 100 cities in India as a part of its Smart City solutions, a project launched in 2015. It has so far earmarked 60 cities, according to Wali. Moreover, Bosch India is also improving its focus on enhancing localisation and is ramping up investments for the same.

Over the last four years, Bosch has invested Rs 3,500 crore in India overall, and in 2016-17, the company is looking at investment of Rs 1,100 crore for the entire Bosch Group. The Bosch Group currently has the largest development centre outside of Germany in India. The company employs over 14,000 research and development associates at its facilities in Adugodi, Bengaluru and Coimbatore.
