Best of 2016: Top car and SUV comparisons

Every time a new car or a facelift is launched, we try to make it a point to compare it to its rivals. While a review is good enough to tell you just how good the car is in its own right it’s when we compare it to its rivals that we actually see how it stands in the segment. This year our comparisons have varied from popular contenders such as the Tata Tiago, Maruti Baleno and Honda City to luxury offerings such as the Mercedes GLS, Audi Q7 and the new Jaguar XF and Volvo S90.

Here is a look at our ten most popular comparisons.

Maruti Baleno vs. Honda Jazz vs. Hyundai i20

The Baleno has been a big success for Maruti when it was launched last year and is the automaker’s bestselling model through its premium Nexa channels. But sitting in the premium SUV segment, the Baleno has strong contenders to face off against, the Honda Jazz and the Hyundai i20. So just how do these three models stack up against each other? Check out our full comparison.

Ford Endeavour vs. Chevrolet Trailblazer vs. Mitsubishi Pajero Sport vs. Toyota Fortuner

Environmentalists may not think highly of big, heavy-duty and powerful SUVs but there are more than a few reasons such models strike a chord with Indian buyers. These SUVs’ sheer size equals huge street cred, their hardy body-on-frame construction means they are built to take a beating, and their large diesel engines give them the go to match the show; the Ford Endeavour offers all of this. So just how does it stack up against its rivals? Click here to find out.

It must be noted that at the time Toyota was yet to launch the new Fortuner, therefore the Endeavour was pitted against the older model. If you are interested in the new 2016 Fortuner, read our comparison here.

Maruti Vitara Brezza vs. Ford EcoSport

Since its debut at the Auto Expo earlier the year and subsequent launch, the Brezza has taken the compact SUV segment by storm. So just how good is Maruti’s first attempt at the compact SUV segment? We pit it against the Ford EcoSport to find out. Read our comparison here.

Tata Tiago vs. Maruti Celerio diesel

Tata looked to thoroughly reinvent itself with the launch of the Tiago, its first all-new model since the launch of the Aria. The automaker sent shockwaves in the industry at the time of launch with the Tiago being positioned to undercut all its rivals by a large margin in terms of pricing. The car also marked the launch of a new 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol and 1.05-litre three-cylinder diesel engines. For this comparison we brought together the diesel Tiago with its chief rival, the Maruti Celerio diesel to see how they compare.

Mahindra XUV500 AT vs. Hyundai Creta AT

When we first drove the XUV diesel automatic we were impressed enough to recommend it over its manual sibling. The Creta on the other hand has gone on to become a favourite of the small SUV buyer, with the model rolling off showroom floors in big numbers. So how would the larger, more expensive XUV500 compare to the Creta diesel automatic? We find out.

BMW X1 vs. Audi Q3 vs. Mercedes GLA

When we drove the new-generation BMW X1 earlier this year, we were really impressed by it. The refreshed styling, improved ride and engaging handling just made it a better all-round package than its predecessor. The overall feeling was that the X1 had evolved to offer everything a compact luxury SUV buyer could want. But was it the best in the segment? We brought along its German rivals the Audi Q3 and the Mercedes GLA to find out. Read our comparison here.

Volkswagen Ameo vs. Ford Figo Aspire diesel

If the diesel versions of the Volkswagen Ameo and Ford Figo Aspire are the top contenders on your compact sedan shopping list, there’s a good chance power and performance are high on your list of priorities. With 110hp and 100hp from their respective 1.5-litre diesel engines, the Ameo and Aspire are the most powerful diesel compact sedans on sale. So which of the two is the better car? Read our comparison to find out.

Volkswagen Ameo vs. Ford Figo Aspire vs. Honda Amaze

Yes, it’s another Ameo vs. rivals comparison, but note the lack of diesel in the above sub-head. We pit the petrol Ameo against its rivals, the Honda Amaze with its rev-happy i-VTEC motor and the best petrol model in the segment, the Ford Figo Aspire. We see how they match up.

    Mercedes C 250d vs. BMW 320d

We did pit the diesel C-class against its German opposition last year but now it’s a new game all together. BMW updated its 3-series earlier in the year with a new 190hp diesel engine finding its way under the car’s hood, while Mercedes strapped another turbocharger to its 2.1-litre diesel and boosted output to 204hp. So just how do the two Germans stack up? Read on to find out.

Fiat Linea 125 S vs. Honda City vs. Hyundai Verna

Fiat, of late, has launched a string of exciting new cars in India. Things took off smartly with the 147hp Abarth Punto. The Avventura, powered by Abarth, then got a 142hp engine and Fiat has now rounded off the range by upping the power of its Linea to 125hp. And, it's not just the power, the Linea also gets an all-new touchscreen as well as several other updates under the skin. The question is how much better have these updates made it? And can it take on the best cars in its class and win? Read on to find out in our comparison.
