Ford has confirmed that a production version of its Escort sedan will make its world debut at the Beijing motor show. The car is targeted at the Chinese market, and will be built locally.

Although no official information has been revealed, rumours suggest the front-drive sedan will use the powertrain from the Chinese-market Focus.

Ford revealed an Escort concept at the Shanghai motor show last year. Of the concept, Ford said it would offer “a fun driving experience, high level of technology, exceptional roominess, uncompromised functionality and sophisticated design".

The model is intended to grow Ford’s presence in China’s compact sedan segment, which generates more than five million sales annually. The marque currently sells second- and third-generation Focus models in China.

While right now the Ford Escort will be sold in China only, the carmaker may consider other markets later.
