Auto Expo 2014: Tata Nexon, Connectnext concepts unveiled

Tata Nexon concept points at future compact SUV

Tata Motors’ big reveal at the Auto Expo was the Nexon compact crossover concept. Based on the X1 platform that underpins the new Tata Bolt and Zest, the Nexon is Tata Motors’ sub-four-metre rival to the Ford EcoSport and upcoming Mahindra S101. And while it’s still a concept, the Nexon points to the future design direction that Tata vehicles will take, and has been designed by Tata’s design teams in Turin, UK and India.

That the Nexon is based on the X1 platform is clear from its looks which are a mix of hatchback and SUV. The sloping roofline and rising beltline give it a crossover appearance, but it looks more like a hopped-up small car than an outright SUV. The flared wheelarches and blacked out scuff plate on the bumpers complete the crossover looks. The production version, however, will be a bit toned down compared to the concept. Its interiors are typically sci-fi, but more importantly, it is equipped with a host of connectivity solutions, but there was more of that in Tata’s other concept car.
Tata’s stall also had a sinister looking hatchback concept called the Connectnext Concept, which showcases some futuristic human-to-machine interface systems. The concept, for example, features a fighter jet-like Heads Up Display (HUD) and smartphone integration.

While this is still a concept, it shows Tata Motors’ push towards integrating more connectivity options in its cars in the future. While all the features showcased may not be immediately available, future Tata cars may just be better connected than the rivals.
