All-new Volvo XC60 India launch in late 2017

Volvo will launch the XC60 with the 235hp, 2.0-litre D5 diesel engine in fully-loaded Inscription trim.

Volvo will launch the all-new Volvo XC60 in India in the latter half of the year. A rival to the Mercedes GLC, Audi Q5 and BMW X3, the XC60 is expected to go on sale in its fully-loaded Inscription trim only and be offered with a host of tech and safety systems.

Interestingly, Volvo has chosen to bring the new XC60 to India with the more powerful 235hp, 2.0-litre D5 diesel engine under the hood. The motor will be paired with an eight-speed automatic gearbox with all-wheel drive as standard. The engine will give Volvo a leg up on rivals in the segment in terms of performance, with its closest rival in terms of power being the 190hp BMW X3 xDrive20d; the more potent 245hp xDrive30d variant is discontinued.

A less powerful 190hp D4 diesel unit – same as that on the Volvo S90 sedan – could also be on the cards for a launch at a later stage. The automaker could also consider bringing in its 320hp T6 petrol and 407hp T8 Twin-Engine petrol-hybrid derivatives of the XC60 at a later stage.

In terms of equipment, the XC60 will be available with goodies such as air suspension, a Bowers and Wilkins audio system, Nappa leather upholstery, a heads-up display and large 19-inch alloy wheels, to name a few. A big highlight though will be that Volvo will be offering a range of radar-based safety systems on the XC60, which could make it the second Volvo in India to get the said systems after the XC90 Excellence.

Volvo says that it will assemble the XC60 at its Bengaluru unit, though the automaker has yet to confirm if the SUV will be assembled from the time of launch itself. Expect pricing to be in the region of Rs 52 – 55 lakh (ex-showroom) which, given the specifications and equipment offered, will be quite competitive.
