All-new 2017 Toyota Camry revealed

Toyota has revealed the all-new Toyota Camry for the North American markets at the Detroit motor show 2017. The model is now underpinned by the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform – the same as that of the new Prius – with Toyota claiming that the car is now more fun to drive than its predecessor.

The new Camry follows what the automaker calls its new ‘Keen Look’ design language. The petrol model gets an aggressive new front bumper with prominent air vents and a large central air dam. The bumper gets inserts and splitter elements finished in black, while the grille is separated from the air dam by a body-coloured surround. The hybrid gets a different bumper with the air dam seemingly stretched across the length of the bumper.

The car gets a sleeker profile with the roofline neatly flowing into the boot lid. Styling cues at the rear include an integrated boot lip spoiler, a diffuser element along the rear bumper and faux slit-like air vents merging into the tail-lamps.

The sportier styling is mirrored by the cabin which gets a more driver focused orientation. The all-new multi-layered dashboard features a mix of trim inserts, including brushed metal finish strips and leather. The centre console gets a V-shaped upper section that houses the infotainment system along with the controls for the air con system. The car also gets ambient lighting on the passenger side of the dashboard and the interior door handles.

Powering the new Camry is a choice of engines. At the top of the range sits a 3.5-litre V6 petrol motor with a smaller all-new 2.5-litre petrol engine offered on lower variants. The Hybrid Camry gets the automaker’s next-gen Toyota Hybrid System which works in conjunction with a 2.5-litre petrol motor. As before, the Hybrid is automatic only but now gets the addition of a Sports mode for its CVT gearbox. No performance figures were revealed.

While this model for the Camry is set to go on sale in North American markets only, the next-gen Toyota Camry for India (ASEAN spec) is expected to borrow styling cues from this model so we can expect styling to be quite similar, if not a bit toned down, for our market. Expect Toyota to reveal the next-gen Camry for the ASEAN markets sometime during the course of the year.

In India, Toyota currently sells the Camry as both a standard petrol and a hybrid, with the latter being the better seller of the two by a large margin. The India-spec Camry is locally assembled by Toyota which enables the Camry Hybrid to benefit from the government’s FAME scheme allowing it to be priced very competitively.
