2017 New York motor show preview

Last year's New York motor show saw manufacturers bringing in some big-hitters, including the Audi R8 Spyder, the facelifted Nissan GT-R and the Mazda MX-5 RF.

This year, there seems to be more US-focused models and a larger selection of SUVs, with the following cars tipped to appear when the show gets underway on April 12:

    Acura TLX

Honda's upmarket Acura brand will be bringing the posh TLX to New York. The sedan’s look is heavily influenced by the sharply styled Precision Concept of last year's Detroit motor show.

    Dodge Challenger SRT Demon

The Dodge Challenger Hellcat’s 717hp clearly wasn’t enough for Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), so they’ve boosted it and added numerous upgrades to make the SRT Demon. It promises to be one of the most extreme muscle cars on the road.

    Ford GT

The show’s choice to put the Ford GT centre stage on its video poster suggests that it’ll have a large presence there.

    Infiniti QX80

Infiniti’s enormous QX80 SUV will get a new look at the New York motor show, three years after it was initially revealed.

    Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk

Not happy with one Hellcat derivative at New York, FCA is expected to bring the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk. It’ll get the same engine as the Dodge Hellcat, although it’s not yet known if it’ll be in that car's full-blown 717hp state of tune.

    Range Rover Velar

Land Rover’s newest Range Rover model made a splash at the Geneva motor show, and will get its American debut at the New York motor show. Under the hood, the Velar is set to be offered with a choice of six engines. There’s a base 2.0-litre, four-cylinder, Ingenium diesel unit in 180hp and 240hp guises. The entry-level petrol engine is a new 2.0-litre Ingenium unit with 250hp. A more potent 300hp version of this engine is expected to join the international line-up by the end of this year.

    Toyota FT-4X

Toyota has only shown a small section of the FT-4X, but the teaser image gives away that it’s on the more rugged end of the SUV scale, suggesting that it could be a replacement for the Hummer-esque FJ Cruiser.

    Ford Police Responder Hybrid Sedan

Ford will launch the first hybrid police car for the New York Police Department. Called the Police Responder Hybrid Sedan, the model is based on the Fusion – the American version of the Mondeo – and comes after the firm announced that it would add hybrid power to the Mustang, Transit and an SUV.

    Nissan 370Z Heritage Edition

The 370Z Heritage Edition also previews the facelifted 370Z, and will be the first look at the new car. The tweaks applied to the 2018 model year car include the standard raft of interior and exterior improvements, as well as revisions to the front and rear light clusters. There’s also a new high-performance clutch from aftermarket parts supplier Exedy for manual models.

    Nissan GT-R Track Edition

The model gets an outing at the New York motor show ahead of sales commencing in the US. The Track Edition sits below the top-of-the-range GT-R Nismo, but above other GT-R models. Changes include new, specially developed Bilstein Damptronic suspension and a revised interior.

    Mercedes-AMG GLC 63

The GLC 63 range – SUV and SUV coupé – has already been revealed, but will make their motor show debut at the New York motor show. Both get 475hp in standard, or 510hp in AMG S guise.
