SCOOP! More images of the new Renault Scala

Badge-engineered Nissan Sunny now has a Renault face. Launch next month.

These are the first pictures of the Renault Scala saloon, which will go on sale next month. The Scala is essentially the Nissan Sunny which has been badge-engineered by Renault. The front-end gets a new grille and headlamps to give it a Renault identity and it looks all the better for it. Unlike the traditional chrome grille the Sunny wears, the Scala gets a hexagonal grille which extends down into the bumper and this makes it look much more distinctive.

The Renault lozenge has been moved up from the grille to the body and the alloy wheels are similar to those on the Renault Pulse. At the rear there isn’t much change except for the tail-lights, which sport a new reflector design. There are no changes to the interior as well, except for the Renault logo on the steering wheel. The Scala will be launched with two engines, the same pair of 1.5-litre 84.8bhp diesel and 1.5-litre 98bhp petrol motors that power the Nissan saloon.

The Scala is likely to be priced marginally more than the Sunny keeping in mind the brand hierarchy in the Renault-Nissan Alliance. However, what remains to be seen is how well customers take to the Renault-badged saloon. If the response to the Renault Pulse, which sells less than a quarter of the mechanically-identical Nissan Micra, is anything to go by, then the Sunny could have the upper hand over the Scala as well. However, the fantastic success of the Duster may have changed the perception of the Renault brand in India. And this bodes well for the Scala.
